Questions about some Houston area schools

U.S.A. Texas

Published

It looks as if my husband's job is going to be relocating us to the Houston (Katy) area. I'm currently half way through nursing school and am looking at transferring. I'm in a BSN program right now but for a variety of reasons am going to look into an ADN for the transfer. I've listed below the schools I'm considering and the questions for each. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much in advance.

Lone Star College - Cy Fair

1) How does the application process work?

2) Their phone message mentioned information sessions but I didn't find any info on their site?

3) Do they offer the classroom portion online or do you have to attend both onsite classes and clinicals?

4) Is the HESI required for transfers?

5) What's the process for getting that campus rather than the other in the Lone Star system?

6) What is your schedule like as a student?

HCC Coleman

1) Any general information about the program - love it, hate it??

2) Do they offer the classroom portion online or do you have to attend both onsite classes and clinicals?

3) What is your schedule like as a student?

Wharton College

1) Are their any other campuses within this system that have a nursing program or only at Wharton?

2) Do I still need the ACT test as a transfer?

3) Do they offer the classroom portion online or do you have to attend both onsite classes and clinicals?

4) What is your schedule like as a student?

If you have any other insight or information on any other program or just general information for me, that would be great! I'm not familiar with Houston at all, so this is a major change for me and these deadlines are coming up quickly!!

lone star college - cy fair

1) how does the application process work? the accept applications twice a year. the amount of students they let in varies btwn 30-60 based on staff. when i started, they let in 50 that semester. of the original 50, 12 of us graduated this past december. it is based on a points system. 12 is the maximum amount of possible points. you get 4 for your gpa in the required: a & p, english & pscyh, you get 4 more based on the amount of the other nursing pre reqs you have completed, and they other 4 is based on your entrance hesi score. to be competitive, you want over an 11.

2) their phone message mentioned information sessions but i didn't find any info on their site? they usually list it on their site. if there is nothing listed, they might not have any schduled any time soon.

3) do they offer the classroom portion online or do you have to attend both onsite classes and clinicals? some classes are online. i took pharm online, legal & ethical online, and i think one more. the first semester we had class/lab on campus about four days a week. for the rest of the program, we were in class one day a week, then clinical twice a week on average.

4) is the hesi required for transfers? not sure. they are on a block program. if you were in a block program, you probably wont' have any problems, but if you were in an integrated program (like most of the schools in the houston area), you might not get to "transfer" your nursing classes...you might need to talk to the nursing office on that one.

5) what's the process for getting that campus rather than the other in the lone star system? you mark that as your first choice on your application.

6) what is your schedule like as a student? see above.

1) any general information about the program - love it, hate it?? took pharm there, and was accepted, but dropped before i started nursing classes. the pharm class was enough indication to me that the school/staff were not a good fit for me.

2) do they offer the classroom portion online or do you have to attend both onsite classes and clinicals?

3) what is your schedule like as a student?

hope this helps you. good luck

Sbyram answered the other questions about Cy-Fair better than I could, as I haven't even applied to the program yet. I did however, just attend an info session on Wednesday, so I know they are holding them. It's a good idea to go, since they are required for application. Checked for you, straight from the website-

Spring 2009 Information Sessions

January 14, 2009 – Conference Center, Room 151

January 28, 2009 – Conference Center, Room 151

Febuary 11, 2009 – Conference Center, Room 151

Febuary 25, 2009 – Conference Center, Room 151

March 18, 2009 - Conference Center, Room 151

April 15, 2009 - Conference Center, Room 15

They were very clear that the best way to get answers to your questions is to e-mail them, but only if you can't find it on the website first. It seems like you might not have found the right site, based on the info sessions. Did you try www.cyfair.lonestar.edu/nursing? Everything is listed on the left hand side. It'd be a good idea to check it out again, because like I said, they were very clear, not rude, but it was mentioned a bunch of times.

Good luck with your decision!
