Questions about Accelerated Nursing Programs

The nursing school I currently attend has an one year accelerated BSN option. There requirements are you must have B's in ALL your pre-req science coures before being accepted. You must also interview and submit an essay along with your application. They will accept you if you are short of one pre-req, but you must have it completed with a B prior to the start of the program which is every August. They are very competitive and only accept 77 students per year for the accelerated option. Most of the students have not had previous medical experience either.

For the accelerated program at my school it is. As long as you have a minimum of B's in all your pre-req's you are good to go. I think they have the essay and interview process to make the determinating factor when two people have the same exact GPA in the pre-req courses.

I think every school may base their admissions decisions a little bit differently. The acclerated BSN program I just got into ranked the applicants based upon various criteria such as grades in A&P I& II, Micro, chemistry, scores on entrance exam, and GPA, and they took the top 48 based upon this ranking. You should check into the various schools in your state and see what they look at for admissions. Good luck!

I will be finishing my Biochem degree (BA) with a 3.0 by the end of this spring term 2007. I want to apply for the accelerated nursing programs, and my residence is in new york city, so I will be applying to school in this state.
I know NYU will admit people even if they haven't finished their prereqs but do other colleges do this as well?
What are my chances of getting into these programs? I understand that they are very competitive. My friend who has a BS in Economics was accepted but had no experience at all in the health field. I'm worried that I will not be accepted because my GPA is lower than his, although the bulk of my degree are all science courses such as organic chem, biochem, physics, and bio.
My friend also told me that he applied as a transfer student, so he didnt have to hand in any recommendations or essays. Is this usually possible?

Schools differ as to their admission/acceptance requirements. I'll be starting an accelerated program at the University of Cincinnati (OH) in June of 2007. UC is good in that it accepts candidates before they complete the prerequisite courses. Admission to the program is contingent upon your resume, nursing goal statement, GPA, GRE scores, and recommendations.

Some programs require that you have the prereqs out of the way before applying. Some need written recommendations, while others are fine if you just submit phone numbers for people they can contact to discuss your background/capabilities.

I'd suggest checking out the schools you're interested in, and make sure you fully understand their admission requirements. You want to try and plan ahead as much as possible. You DO NOT want to get down to the "wire" and realize that you're missing something.

The UC Accelerated Pathway admissions committee meets on the first Monday of every month except July & August. My offer letter was postmarked 3 days after they met, and I received it a couple days later.
