I hope someone here can help me. I am wrestling with the decision of going to UT-Houston or UT Arlington for nursing school. I know they are both great schools. However, I have always been under the impression that UT-Houston is considered slightly "better". Now that I am deciding, I have heard from multiple people that UTA is one of the top schools in the nation. Does anyone know where they are getting their information? Or has anyone seen or heard anything like this before? I haven't seen anything to indicate this online and I have done a TON of research. UT-Houston is my dream school so I'm sticking with it unless I find some evidence that UTA is as amazing as some people are telling me. If anyone has any insight, PLEASE let me know!

Laughing that your username is Aggie girl yet UT is your dream school.
I haven't heard anything about UT Arlington so I can't speak for them, but I do know that UT-H is an excellent nursing program. Also at UT-H you have the advantage of doing your clinicals in the world renowned Texas Medical Center.
Is there one that is more convenient for you? Whatever you decide you will end up with your BSN and have great opportunities. Good luck!
I know right-I'm a walking contradiction. My first degree is from A&M but UT has way better nursing programs, so UT it is! I'll have to get one of those house divided bumber stickers tattooed on my forehead.
UTA is far more convenient and would be cheaper as I am from Arlington. But, I would still rather go to UTHSC. I'm just confused because now more than one person has told my parents "tell her to pick UTA-it's top 10 in the nation!" I don't know how multiple people came up with the same thing when I can't find a single thing that substantiates their claim. My mind is pretty made up anyway-I just figured I'd try the people who may know.:nuke:

Hello Aggiegrl07!
I see that you are interested in applying for UTA. I like to share with you my experiences on that school. That school left me a really bad impression on several occasions. My goal was to apply and get admitted to their Fall 2008 program. I waited at least a few months or so for my acceptance letter to the university. :anbd: The office of admissions somehow kept misplacing my official transcripts (and those transcripts do not come at a cheap price)! Usually the rule of thumb is to apply for nursing school after the admission to the university. Because the office of admissions kept misplacing my transcripts and time was running out, I decided to go ahead and apply for the nursing school. The deadline for Fall 2008 was January 2nd. As it turns out, I received my rejection letter from the nursing school on Valentine’s Day. :grn:The nursing advisor told me I did not meet the minimum number of credit hours prior to admission. I tried so hard convincing her that I did meet the minimum requirements and with hope she could reevaluate my official transcripts one more time. :plsebeg:She kept her word and insisted on reapplying with all the completed prerequisites. I’m using this Spring semester as the last semester to complete all the courses. Days later, I received my acceptance letter to the university. Out of all the schools I applied to, this is the only school I had the most problems with! I don't know if they are like this to other students.
This experience gave me the impression that the staff are not competent with evaluating students' documents.
If you are really considering UTA, always apply early and keep track of your official transcripts! Hopefully you don't have to go through what I been through!
I've actually been admitted to both schools for Fall 2008. I also had transcript issues with UTA! The application asked what courses I was currently enrolled in and then they requested the transcript for those courses! It seemed pretty obvious to me that I couldn't send transcripts in in January for courses I was currently enrolled in. Oh well, it luckily got worked out right on time. Thanks for the response!
On reputation.... UT Houston is ranked as one of the top nursing schools (top 5%) by US News and World Report. I did a google search for UT Arlington and didn't find anything. I think the UT Houston reputation is more prominent. If it were me, I'd choose UT Houston. But it is up to you depending on all the other factors that you have to weigh. You mentioned your family is in Arlington. Does this mean you could possibly live with them and save on rent while in school? If it means saving tens of thousands of dollars of living expenses and loans, consider staying at UT-A, but I still think UT Houston is a better nursing program.

I know nothing about UTA, but UT-H does clinicals in the medical center.. off of that, I'd go there.

I'm graduating from UTA in 2 days and I think it's pretty wonderful. I don't think it's a
"ranked" program, at least not at the undergraduate level. But, the faculty are fantastic and very supportive. UTA has a good reputation in DFW, at least, which would be good if you're planning on staying in the area.
That being said, if you have your heart set on Houston, I think you should go there. Life's too short to choose a path just because it could save you some money (unless, of course, it's a LOT of money). Go to the place that you think will make you the best nurse possible
Keep in mind that tuition is going waaaaay up at UTA for the Fall as well, so you may not be saving as much as you think by going to UTA.

I'm a UTA nursing senior. I know that UTA has the highest NCLEX passing rate in Texas and the only nursing school in the country with a genome lab. I have classmates that got into Baylor's nursing school and wouldn't go until they heard from UTA first.
I have one of the lower GPAs when I got in-- I had a 3.5 GPA when I was a sophomore and my adviser told me that she thought I only had a 60% chance of getting in!
The University of Texas Arlington School of Nursing (UTASON) is among the 20 largest Schools of Nursing in the United States. Located in the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, it is also one of the oldest schools of nursing in the Southwest. The graduate program has been recognized in the top 25% of schools by US News and World Report and the undergraduates ranked number one in licensure exam scores ( 98.8%) among 25 BSN programs in Texas.
Over the past three and a half decades, the school has grown and developed into a nationally recognized program with more than 100 faculty and 1,300 nursing students. UTASON has prepared 9,000 alumni for nursing careers with baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees.

This wasn't from UTA's website, but from Laerdal, a company that manufactures medical equipment.
