Just curious--why do people use the term "MDA" instead of "anesthesiologist?"
I mean--one has to BE an MD to BE an anesthesiologist, so it's UNDERSTOOD that he/she is an MD. It just seems redundant to me to call someone an MDA. Not criticizing, just wonder how the term happened to become popular, and only recently, it seems. In 30 years of OR nursing, I have never heard someone refer to himself or a colleague as "an MDA" in any clinical setting in which I've worked. But, I guess it's the redundancy that really bothers me.
OK, I'll shut up now and go back to my corner. :)

i have no idea if this is the reason why, but the first thing that came to mind when i read your question was the fact that there are crnas - certified registered nurse anesthetists. so perhaps that is why people differentiate now. or maybe there's a whole other reason i'm completely unaware of :chuckle that's my guess though.
i know that. i guess a better way to word my question was this:
"why do people who post on the nurse anesthetist section of allnurses ---who are, for the most part, crnas (that is, nurse anesthetists) or aspiring or student crnas, refer to anesthesiologists as mdas?" it's phenomenom i've noticed mostly here, not in clinical practice.

Probably because it's less typing and less likely to have a spelling error. Just as simple as that. You won't hear it in the clinical setting for the most part because Anesthesiologists for the most part don't like the abbreviation. It leaves out Anesthesiologists who are DO's. Are you going to call them DOA's? :) Not likely.

DOAs? Doctors Of Anesthesia? Can't imagine why they might have a problem with being referred to as DOAs.
Seriously, MDA is nothing more than shorthand. Three letters rather than sixteen in seven syllables. It's an abbreviation, that's all. Hard to believe stevierae hasn't heard that particular expression before, as it's been in common use for 25-30 years at least.
But ... DOA. I'm liking that better.......

for some reason - i absolutely love deepz sense of humor.... :rotfl:
Oh, OK, makes sense.
I remember back in the '60s there was an animal tranquilizer (probably similar to Ketamine) called "MDA." Don't know if it's still around, or what the real name was.

Well--I never worked with CRNAs until the mid-'90s--always worked with anesthesiologists from the early '70s and through the early '90s.
But it COULD be because the CRNAs I worked with had a different term for the anesthesiologists, which was "lazy b***ards"..... :rotfl:

steavierae- in the OR do you say bilateralsalpingooophorectomy or bso?
I personally think it is just another acronym...some of the docs, or the residents get all bent out of shape with the term mda...fine. I know anesthesiologist isnt that many syllables, but mda is quick, clear, and efficient. I guess I am lazy.
On the drug thing...I think amphetamine or ecstacy is MDMA? Maybe that is why they dont like the acronym?

Just out of curiosity, I googled it by typing in "MDA" & "animal tranquilizer."
MDA is Methylenedioxyamphetamine.
MDMA (ecstacy) is MethylenedioxyMETHamphetamine. Whatever; they are both speed. Yes, that may be why they don't like the acronym; you're right.

I see. So it HASN'T been in use for 25-30 years, as deepz states. I know I've been AROUND for 50 years, and never heard it until I encountered this section of this BB! LOL!!
