Hi all, I have a question about hospital shifts. I have specific hours I need to work, I would pefer part-time every Sat and Sun 7am-7pm or if I couldn't get that I could work an afternoon shift like 3-11 full time if I had to. The only shift I really do not want to do is 7pm-7am. Is it realistic for someone who would be a new grad to get those kind of hours somewhere, or if you are new, is it pretty much a given you will be stuck on the night shift?

As a new grad, the most opportunities are mostly available on nights (7p-7a). All of the places I interviewed at did not do 8 hours shifts anymore, the only shifts available were 7a-7p or 7p-7a. Is there a specific reason why you can't do night shift? I would not let it known to HR or whoever you are interviewing with that you only want to work specific hours. I would say you would prefer daytimes hours but are open to all opportunites and then if you get an offer you can make a decision at that time.
Thanks for the advice Anna. I really don't want to do night shift because of family obligations, but I will do what I have to do. I'm not really surprised that new people just starting out would get the undesirable shifts.

first of all, congrats on graduating from nursing school! way to go!
secondly, on our unit (nicu), we only have 12 hr shifts, the standard 7a-7p, and 7p-7a. new grad nurses have been hired and have started and stayed on the 7a-7p shift. you just have to meet with the unit manager of the unit you want to work in, and let him/her know of your desires and see what is available. hopefully you will find something that fits your schedule. good luck!
