Question for second year nursing students

Hello all ,

My question is what area of the hospital do you think would have helped you with your transition in nursing school? I have worked in a trauma center for 25 years. Is there any other a:)rea that you recommend to have experience that would make it easier for your clinicals. I have enjoyed working in the Er but would like to do ICU or Recovery.

    I would highly recommend getting your Certified Nursing Assistant license before going to nursing school. It's just one class that generally takes 8 weeks. It will get you in the swing of things when it comes to time management and interacting with patients, families, and coworkers. Its hard work but rewarding.

    Are there any nurse extern or shadowing experiences in your area? Find out what hospitals in your area as well as if your program allow you to be able to get exposure in the areas you are interested in. Good Luck!

    If you are going to go or are already in nursing school, I highly recommend you work on a med-surg floor. You can gain a ton of experience, the NCLEX is all about med-surg areas. I also recommend you work on a med-surg floor for at least 2 years before you transition elsewhere. I currently work on a cardiac step-down unit with med-surg over flow. I have been there almost 2 years after graduation from a BSN program. It is very stressful and fast paced and I love every minute of it. I have learned a great deal these past couple of years, I learn something new everyday. This is just my suggestion, I feel as If I can transition into to the ER or ICU very well at this point; However, I am going to go to NP school this fall instead. I am looking forward to advancing my career. Good luck.
