Question for all your school nurses

Published

Can LPNs be school nurses?

What do you typically do in your field?

What is a typical day in your shoes like?

Thanks,

In Pennsylvania, no, they cannot be school nurses, but they can be assistant nurses. This translates to less money but in many ways, it is the same job. I think Praiser is an LPN and she is a school nurse, not sure where she is from, though. Maybe she will respond to your question. Snoop around the school nurse forum and you will see many posts about what we do. We so screenings, make sure immunizations are up to date, write health plans. provide education for students and staff, work on wellness committees, do first aid...so many things. I always advise anyone who is thinking about school nursing to find a local school where you can substitute. It's like any other speciality. Some people, (like me!) love it and others don't.

You will want to check what the requirements are for school nursing in your state. This link is to the 50 state school nurse organizations: http://www.nasn.org/Default.aspx?tabid=60

If the state website does not spell out the requirements, it should provide contact information for someone who can help you.

Even if a state requires the RN license or certification to be a school nurse, often there are LPN roles working with an RN in a school or providing 1:1 care for a medically fragile child. So go for it and look into it.
