Question regarding clinical hours and theory hours of Philippine Nursing schools

World Philippines

Published

Hello, I am a Filipino American considering going to school in the Philippines, and I am checking different colleges in the Philippines to see what the number of clinical hours and theory hours their nursing program provides for the following nursing categories: Medical, Surgical, Obstetric, Pediatric, Psychiatric/Mental Health, and Geriatric.

I only got one response, and what I received was a copy of the nursing school's nursing curriculum. I could not understand which nursing category the classes were under. Do all schools in the Philippines follow the same requirements? I really need to know the exact clinical and theory hours for each nursing category so that I can check to see which state I will be eligible to apply for licensure upon graduation.

Thank you for any help that can be provided.

It will depend a bit on which state you plan on living and working in after you graduate. Just be aware that some states are having a clamp down on concurrence meaning that clinical and theory needs to be done mainly at the same time. Please read the threads in the Nurse Registration forum that discuss this topic and the states names as clamping down.

Sometimes better to train in the country you plan on working in rather than going abroad when issues may arise

Thanks for the reply. I understand the challenges with training in another country other than the U.S. I will be helping and supervising care for my parents while I am going to school. They both have medical issues which they are struggling with, and I have decided that they need me to be close to them. I am not planning on pursuing licensure in California or any other state that has extremely difficult hoops to jump through.

I am really looking for a specific answer to my question. It seems like I can't get a straight answer, or maybe the information is not readily available.

Unfortunately each state has different requirements and most hard to find and only way you know you meet their clinical and theory requirements is when you get eligibility to sit NCLEX

The advices provided by Silverdragon pretty much says it all, kabayan. Since you have ruled out trying to get a license in CA and other States enforcing the concurrency rules, should at least narrow down your possible States that you want to work and play in for several years as you take care of your ailing parents.

A neighboring State particular requirements will be different from one another, from west to east coast or the reverse, every State has its own standards and measures. Once you pin-pointed whatever that state is, is where you can make the specific questions you're asking about by contacting that State's BON.

Being of dual-C, you might also want to obtain the local PH license as many States are making it a part of their minimum documentation request. Being a dual-C or even a USC does not automatically pre-clude you from NOT trying to apply to take the local PH exam. I know of several batchmates who simply didn't check off the citizenship box and still got to take the exam and passed.

It's just one less (but could be a large stumbling block) to a PH applicant by not able to provide a State with the local license.

I think also having a local PH license is one item that can be verified by any State's BON by contacting the actual PH board to verify the license numbers and to ensure against possible fradulent paperwork.

Ok, thank you very much for your reply. That is something to consider regarding taking the board exam in the Philippines. I was really just curious if there was a standard number of clinical hours and theory hours for Philippine nursing programs in the following nursing categories: Medical, Surgical, Obstetric, Pediatric, Psychiatric/Mental Health, and Geriatric. From the info that I have gathered, Philippine nursing programs don't break down their clinical and theory hours in those particular categories, but I know that most state nursing boards want that particular info. I have no idea if clinical hours are equivalent to something called RLE hours. I will try to make sense of it all and work with the information that I have been given. Thanks again.

Try posting same concerns in the "Nurse Registration" section under the World tab....or ask to move your topic to there, if the admin's deem it's okay to move it there to get better answers.
