Question on pre-reqs and my chances for admission to nursing school!

Published

Hi,

I'm very new to this but was under the impression that I could do my pre-reqs before school started next year, and not before I applied to nursing schools. It seems to depend on the schools?

I'm obviously a noob here but am interested in applying to nursing school for next fall/summer. I've only volunteered once in a hospital (because I come from a country where volunteering isn't that easy to do for women). Also, I have a background in human rights work and have a 3.83 GPA in English Literature. I feel like all signs point to me not getting into the program I'd like to get into (Columubia ETP) because of the lack of real experience in a hospital, but could I try anyways, do you think?

Thanks so much in advance!! :)

Hi Clearly,

For direct entry-level MSN programs, experience in clinical settings is a plus, but something that is not required. I would recommend getting your pre-reqs out of the way before you actually apply to the program, if possible. A lot of programs give more points to those who have the pre-reqs completed at the time of applying. With that being said, I think you should definitely try for the Columbia ETP. Good luck!! :)

Hey Clearly,

I am looking into applying to Direct Entry programs this fall and I would definitely get in contact with someone at the school you were interested to talk to them about their prereqs and what they would suggest. I have found the directors of the Direct Entry programs super helpful, and even information sessions are a good source for getting questions answered. I never took statistics in college but for one of the programs I am interested in you have to have proof of passing a statistics class before you can even submit your application to the program, which almost caused me not to be able to apply this fall. Also if you are currently working you should see if your company has a tuition reimbursement program, I'm almost finished with my prereqs and I didn't have to spend any of my own money! Good Luck!
