Question about pre-req classes

Published

Hey guys. So I'll be going to our community college. I go the end of July for the placement test. Once I take that do I get a schedule? And if Im going to school part time, how does it work? Im very confused. I need ALL the courses.

Most colleges offer a course on the nuts and bolts of college, study skills, etc. If your community college offers that you might consider taking that course first. Your placement tests will give you the info you need to know which English and math courses you can start with. Some colleges require a placement test for chemistry also. You should call the school and get an appointment to meet with an advisor now before school starts since you don't know what to do. Go to the school's website. There you will find the catalog and current class schedule. You may be able to register for classes online. But you have to enroll in the school first. You might be able to do that online also. You pick the class(es) you want to take by looking at the schedule and deciding which you can fit into your daily schedule. Since you are going to attend part time it will take you longer to meet your goals. You will need to take general education courses for your degree as well as pre req courses for your major (I assume nursing). You can't sign up for English or math until you have the results from your placement exams, but you can sign up for other classes. So go to the website and look at the schedule of classes and see what you want to take, look at the catalog and compare the classes you want to take with what you have to take and decide what you want to register for.

You can also go to the college bookstore before your appoinment with an advisor. The printed version of the schedule of classes is usually available a few weeks before school starts. Go to the main admin building also. There you can usually find printed sheets with the requirements for each major printed on them.

The more you find out before the term starts, the better off you will be. Good luck.

Well you first have to take the placement test to see where you fall class level wise... You need to get all the (pardon my language) bullshit classes out of the way first like the lower level maths (if you test into those, and work your way up), english, a biochem which is usually an intro class at most community colleges, then after the biochem you can get into the "meaty" part of the pre-req's like A&P, Micro, etc. I would suggest first meeting with a counselor to find the best path for you. It's hard b/c alot of the pre-req nursing classes have pre-req's before you can get into them! Good luck to you!!!!

I would suggest brushing up on some of your math and English skills. I waited a couple of years after graduation H.S. to start college. I'm guessing you aren't coming straight from H.S. since you are 30. I didn't do as well on my English and math placement test as I thought I would. I am normally really good at math, but I couldn't remember some of the formulas. I had to take a remedial class which was a total waste. I wish I would have brushed up on my math before taking the test. I had to take an English class (which wasn't remedial, but they did give you a little extra help), but I thought that really helped. Good luck!
