Question on Peds Exam 3

Ok , So I am reviewing my exam 3 and question number three was a growth and development question:
A child who is five years old would most likely exhibit:
a) concrete thinking
b) makes simple classifications
c) exhibits intuitive thought
d) abstract thinking
Well obviously a & d are incorrect - wrong stage, so we are left with b and c. Ok, well I know that between the ages of 4-7 they start intuite thought and simple class. is more 2-4. Our instructor says its B even though the kid is five. Her rationale is that he is at the beg. of that stage(intuitive thought) and the child won't be as developed as in the later part of the stage. As far as I'm concerned if the book says 4-7 then 5 falls in with that. Why pull a "maybe he's not developed" ? Am I supposed to look at the other groups like that as well? So if the child is 6, does that mean he may still be exhibiting 5year old tendencies? How GRAY is that?
And how about the mixed defect question with high normal lab values?
Answer compensating with hypoxia Not Normal.
It'll be different on the final, I'm sure. Any comments?

I am not a nurse but would have to guess b.

I would have gone for B as well only because the question asks what child would "most likely" exhibit.. and so therefor b. I know that some of the questions are very gray but life is kind of gray.. no black and white for me at least.

Hi. I recently graduated with a BSN this past August 2005. I also just passed my NCLEX this October 2005. So, I am going to attempt to answer your question with my minimal critical thinking skills. I like to use the process of elimination on every test question I had taken. Especially in PEDS because it wasn't one favorite subjects, I liked Med-Surg for some strange reason...but that's another story. Answers A and D are completely wrong as you stated before but answer C is wrong because it is the same as A and D but its worded differently. the words thinking & thought all require a higher level of reasoning. Little kids don't think before they act nor do they have any thoughts about anything. For example, they are unable to imagine what could/would happen if they light a match and throw it on the bed...

To comment on the second question...hypoxia is abnormal because it means that oxygen levels are low. Not enough O2 in a child is alway BAD!!! My teacher tested us on identifying expected and unexpected situations. I hated them, but now I understand why...it's important to know what is normal and what is abnormal when taking care of a pt. Because identifying signs of complications saves lives and your career!!

I hope this helps...remember I am still learning also. That's just my opinion. But don't just take my word for it...LOOK IT UP IN YOUR PEDS BOOK!!! Never just take one's wrong for it always check it, first. Then agree.

I know this is 6 years too late to reply to your post, but i think i found the answer. I too came across a similarly worded question and choices were almost the same as yours. Anyway, as you guessed, I too have the same answer as yours, which is a c) Exchibits Intuitive thought. At first i was convinced that B or makes simple classification was the answer but as I did countless research over the internet to confirm i found the answer from this book via the internet on pg 712 "Health Assessment in Nursing, 4e": North American Edition By Janet R. Weber, Jane Kelley (Health Assessment in Nursing, 4e ... - Google Books).

It states that verbatim, "the stage of preoperational thought (age 2 to 7 years) consists of 2 phases. In the preconceptual phase, extending from age 2 to 4, the child forms concepts that are not as complete or logical as an adult's; makes simple classifications; associates one event with a simlutaneous one (transductive reasoning); and exhibits egocentric thinking.

"In the intuitive phase extending from age 4-7, the child becomes capable of classifying, quantifying, and relating objects but remains unaware of the principles behind these operations; exhibits intuitive thought processes (is aware that something is right but cannot say why); is unable to see viewpont of others; and uses many words appropriately but without a real knowledge of their meaning."
