Question for OHSU Ashland BSN Students

Hello everyone,

I might be attending OHSU in Ashland next year, and I was just wondering whether I should bring my car there. Is it difficult to get around by bus? Are the hospitals really far?

CuriousMe and others, I wanted to know more about the OHSU Ashland campus and if you don’t mind talking about the pros/cons of OHSU, Financial aid, quality of the program, instructors, living location advice...anything!!! Are you happy you chose OHSU? Do you wish you would have gone somewhere else? I need to decide where I am going to go soon and any help/info/advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Honestly, I love the program. I was accepted to an OCNE CC as well, and I'm so glad I came here. I promise, I'm not a paid spokesperson or anything ....but I really do love the program.

The professors are just amazing folks. They're smart as heck (there's two that I swear know everything....they deny it, but I've yet to find something they didn't know), most are still either practicing or researching, and on top of all of those amazing skills and backgrounds, they are gifted teaches and truly involved and concerned in students' progress. The program does a great job of balancing physical skills (we were doing IV's a year earlier than friends who are in one of the OCNE CC's) and really helping you develop critical thinking skills. Additionally, for the first term...they get you out in to the community. Now, it seems it would be exciting to get in the hospital right away...but as we didn't have any skills to speak of yet, they put in the community and let us work on our developing skills, while we were useful as well. So, to gain experience giving IM's we staffed community flu shot clinics, to practice taking vitals we took vitals at a middle school one day (the data we collected was used in a Senior's research project to first identify and then intervene in kids with a high BMI and blood pressure)...you get the idea. Great and rich clinical experiences that also helped someone else out.

The only real con so far, is that they've made the lecture portions of our Populations and epidemiology term completely online. I really don't enjoy that mode of learning for a lecture driven class. But, again my clinical experiences in that term have been really fantastic.

Now, I am torn between two schools versus four, however OHSU is more appealing. I wish you the best of luck in your nursing endeavors and hopefully we'll cross paths in Ashland. :D

it is last year's post, but i would like to start this again. i applied for ohsu ashland. if there are some students here from there, could you please tell me about pharmacology and pathophysiology classes. were these classes online or in class? how were the professors? if it was in classes, did you guys have a good lectures or was just reading from powerpoint? do you think lecture prepared you well for the exams?

these are the classes that i am scared the most. to be honest, a&p was not easy class for me. english is not my first language, and maybe i take longer time to get the point or smth..

how much is it to rent a studio or one bedroom apartment over there? i live in portland now. what did you guys to during the summer? were you able to get a student job at the hospital for summer?

it would be great to hear from someone.

Hi Hawaii! The Ashland campus of OHSU only houses the BSN program. When you apply to the OHSU BSN program, you declare which of the 5 BSN campuses you are applying to.

patho and pharm are both in class lectures. powerpoints are used but you have to add notes to them. the pharm professor will be different than the one who taught the year i took it but all the instructors i had were excellent. the classes are challenging but if you put in the study time you will do well. i estimate a minimum of 4 hrs a day needed to study in the first year. i don't really know what apartments cost here but i am sure you can do a real estate search. a 3 bdrm house runs about $1000 a month. split 3 ways between roomates and it would be quite affordable. there is talk of adding summer clinical time but as of now this is not in place. many students got jobs as cna's after their first year so i am sure that you would be able to do the same.

hawaii- ohsu has 5 campuses. when you apply you can designate which campuses you are interested in attending. ashland has their classes on the sou campus and clinicals are held in local hospitals from ashland to medford and grants pass.

i have to add to curiousme's endorsement. i feel i got a well rounded and excellent education at ohsu full of diverse clinical experiences. the faculty really care about the students as people on top of providing the information we need to be successful.
