Question for nurses

I am in my second year of an accelerated 3 year BSN program. I have a 3.6 average, yet here is the problem: I feel like I am learning nothing.

What I mean is, I can pass the tests as they come up, but there is so much material and so little time, that I feel like I am dumping information. As soon as the test is over.....I feel like the information is lost.

Also, I feel like our teachers aren't really teaching. They brush over the material and expect you to read it at home and fully understand and be ready to test. They constantly say "We can't teach you everything....you have to be self sufficient".

IS this normal? Does anyone else feel like this?

Nursing is difficult as it is trying to fit in all you need to know in a conventional program. An accelerated course will throw it at you faster in greater volume. I would assume that there would have to be a ton of independent learning in order to finish the curriculum. nursing school prepares you to be safe.....the rest remains in clinical and on the job training and experience. I have heard that this is one of the reasons hospitals are shying away from new nurses and shying away in larger numbers from accelerated programs because they just can't spend the time teaching basics.

I think all students in nursing feel over whelmed with the amount of information that is thrown at you regardless of what program you are attending. Be patient with yourself, you are obviously getting some information because your GPA is good. Relax, accept that unfortunately it is what it is, and realize that nursing takes time and experience. Many nurses, including myself when I was new, knew they had no clue how to be a nurse even after we passed boards. The rest of it came in time. :hug:
