Hi i am graduating this April at the Local LPN college in Edmonton. I was wondering the chances of getting a Job as a new Grad in the area? Preferably the Royal Alex Hospital. Do they hire New Grads? Is it hard jobs now because of the IEN's taking all the positions? I applied for positions on their website I wonder how long for a response if I get to sit for an Interview? Fianoa69 or anybody can help me with this. Thank you very much

OK, you are a GPN until you write the exam. When there is a new grad initiative available they post it on the 'net. It can take from one day to a month for them to call (if you qualify) after the competition closes.

The IENs are a different kettle of fish. Their one year contracts are up this summer and they have to find at least a 0.8FTE to retain their visas.

RAH always hires new grads. You may not get a full time position on the unit you want right of the bat. Seniority is taken into account. With recent economic downturn, floats are applying for part time positions. So you may not get the most desirable units. Medicine is always hiring. The float pool hires new grads and there are usually a couple of full time lines around. You get a good orientation to the different units on the service that hires you.

If you do your final placement at RAH and your unit manager likes your work ethic they often tell you what is available.

Thanks so much Fiona59. The CLPNA said it will issue our temp permit around the 2nd week of April. I did apply for the New Grad Initiative which closed a week ago and choose to do RAH medicine.I guess its all a waiting game right now. They said 2 weeks but it can take longer I guess. As well I applied to certain Medicine Units. Guess is all up to seniority and availability right? For the Float Pool do you just apply if there is a posting or can you go to human resources and apply for it? how does that work? sorry for the questions long time reader first time poster. Any help will be appreciated. :)

Usually vacancies in the float pool are posted. They can range from casual to full time. Or your preceptor and host unit manager can tell you who to get in tough cwith.

Seniority is being closely watched by existing staff due to the IEN situation.
