Question about meds

Hey everyone.

My instructor just told me that I should have been remediated due to the fact that I was going to give meds on a patient (90 yo with CHF) when their BP was 98/56 (HR 92). I would like to know besides in the MAR where you would find parameters for giving the meds. When I researched Metoprolol I only found warnings regarding HR not the BP. Any help would be appreciated.

Always check the Dr's orders in the pt's chart. When in doubt, call the Dr. I had a situation like this in clinicals and after talking to the Dr parameters were set. This pt had extreemly low parameters as pt was CHF and meds were needed to control CHF. Sounds like your situation, too. I went back and checked my pt's BP a bit more often in fear that it was going to go way too low.

Well It should be in the mar if a physician wrote parmeters, otherwise you would go by what the drug book suggests. But I really don't know any cardiologist that would want the beta blocker held for that bp and hr. Maybe under 90. I think the books usually say systolic less than 100. But check with doctor unless parameters are written.

I'm sorry I should have said, the were NO parameters given by the doctor.

Thanks for your replies.
