Question about LPN classes, etc.

Hi group!

I am taking the NET test tomorrow for possible entry into LPN school.

My goal(we all need them) is LPN - RN - BSN(online) - CRNA(through VA).

Did I mention I am a male?

My question:

The LPN school does not participate in federal loan programs.

So to support myself and my family(wife and 3 children) I am going to

have to take at least 6hours each semester online through the local community college to receive the loans. I know debt is not desirable.

I have no other way currently and am taking the LPN so that I can get a desirable job that hopefully will pay for the further schooling. I have a great contact at the VA and am just waiting to get my LPN behind me.

What are the thoughts on the 6 hours online during LPN school?

My wife will help me with the classes. The LPN course will last for Fall, Spring and Summer. Then direct entry into LPN-RN.

Please give opinions, etc.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Joel Thomas

Info: My previous experience is fulltime fire department EMT, I am not new to the medical field and am not going into this with pre-conceived notions. I just wanted to stop the "You have no idea what you are in for" comments. I have run into so many at school that have changed careers because of discouraging comments, there is no need for them.

I am interested to hear how the on line classes for LPN pan out for you because this is the first that I am hearing about such a thing. Please post occasionally to share yow this experience is for you. It is no surprize, though, because this is a way for the institution can gain more money and students. Will there be a clinical component somewhere down the road? I think that working as an EMT will be a great advantage for you, especially working for the fire department, because many of the terms will be familiar to you, and you will function well when a patient is in crisis; so, no criticism about career changes would come from me. Best wishes and good luck!

I think it can work if you take something very easy that won't take up a lot of time. I took Developmental psychology on line while in LPN school and I managed to get through it. I would talk to the head of your nursing department because at my school, 1/3 of the class got nursing scholarships. I got $1000 for the whole year and by you being male going into the nursing program, you may have a chance. Good Luck!

Thank you for the reply.

The online classes I mentioned will not be nursing related. They are for my BSN online that I will be taking after RN.

I started college with BSN pre-req's knowing that after RN I would not want to go back for the basics. I believe I made a good choice as I have almost all my BSN pre's before even starting LPN school.

Thank you for the heads up about the scholarship.

This could definitely help, although I will be in need of much more than $1000 in a year. But, $1000 grant is better than $1000 loan.

Thank you very much.
