Question about GPA for those with a previous degree

Published

Hi everyone. I have a question regarding GPA for CRNA requirements.. I have been searching the web for answers for my particular case but nothing has been clear so far.

I will be earning my BSN, and it is my second degree. My previous degree was in the sciences (Biology). Frankly, my GPA wasn't so good for that degree (2.8ish), as it was a very competitive school and I am not the brightest science student. Assuming I continue to do well in nursing school, my BSN GPA will be very high and I will of course be working towards keeping that.

My question is: Will CRNA schools look at only my BSN GPA, or will they look at all my courses from my previous degree, AS WELL AS my nursing courses, and figure out a GPA from there?

Similar question for science courses GPA: will they look at a standardized set of science courses for GPA purposes (Like A&P I and II, Microbiology, Chemistry, Physics, Pharm, Biology)? Or will they look at ALL of the science classes I took from my previous degree ,including the "not required" courses like Genetics, Developmental Biology...?

I took alot of these science classes for my first degree, and obviously didn't have stellar grades in them, but the science classes I took for prerequisites were pretty good (and these all happen to be A&P, Micro, and pharm (I got A's), I transferred biology from my first college (I got B's in these)). I am concerned that just because it has the science label that they will count it even though it is not required. I am worried that no matter how well I do from now on, I will be punished for my first degree when it comes down to GPA.

They will look at everything. I would get as many "A's" in nursing school as possible. I wouldn't worry about it until you are finished with nursing school. Focus on one thing at a time and that is doing well in the BSN program. You can worry (or not) about previous courses after that as you can't change them now.

If you get a 3.5+ in your BSN program I wouldn't worry. If you get below that, I would get prepared to explain your grades or start taking graduate level courses to prove you can handle the school work.

Some schools may place more emphasis on the previous degree in regards to how it effects your overall GPA, some may only care about the last 60 hours you've taken. But again, I would concentrate on your BSN... Then getting into an ICU... then learning to become a competent nurse... then worry about grades from a previous degree. Just my opinion.
