Question about BSN @ Hunter or LEHMAN

I am a student who is going to be entering Hunter as a transfer student for Fall 2009. I am entering as a History major but I hope to get into the program at Hunter or Lehman.

I have all of my prereqs complete with B's or above except General Chem(premed level): B-, Organic/Biochemistry:C, Stats: C+, APII: C. I plan on taking these classes over again. My plan is attend Hunter and aim for 3.7-4.0 for the Fall semester and apply for Fall 2010. If I don't get in I will continue there and keep up the good grades and apply again for Fall 2011. If I don't get in I will graduate and apply to the accelerated program at Concordia- I live in Mount Vernon so it's basically in my backyard.

Anyways, can any of you who did get into one of the programs at Hunter or Lehman tell me your stats (GPA, and test score), just so I can gauge myself and have an idea what those admins are looking for.

Thank you.

I just graduated from Lehman. I was accepted with GPA 3.9 as a second degree student. I loved the program. the instructors are great. If you have more questions I will be happy to help.

Hello, Biju27.

I would like hear about Lehman Nursing More specifically. want to know about the classes, quality of teaching and passing rates. I've heard that many students failed in each semester. i don't know about Lehman. Plz help me~

hello, Accel2010.

i applied hunter last year and was accepted but i couldn't go for personal issues.

Hunter consider all your classes including pre-requisites so if you got D in History, they still consider that grade even though it isn't a pre-requisite.

At hunter, my GPA was 3.8 but i transfered from a cc in NJ and total GPA was 3.3 when i applied. I think Hunter consider your NLN score more than GPA.

Two of my frends got accepted and their GPA was 3.0 and 3.1 but their NLN score was 154 and 158.

Hunter is highly competitive because so many students applies. But, the higher score you got in NLN, the more chance you can get in.

Lehman, they only consider your pre-requisite courses. I applied Lehman and i got all A's in science courses.

Oh, one more thing,, for both schools, even though you repeat whatever classes you took, they only consider 1st grade. So, do not repeat courses!!

Instead, take some easy classes to boost your grade up.

Hi Beedori,

Do you know how Hunter calculated GPA? Is it true if you get an A-, they consider that as an A?

Thanks.

I am a Hunter grad and I'd say that overall it was a great program.

To apply, though on the application criteria says 2.5, they don't consider anything in that range (in my year my classmates were mostly all 3.2 and above). Doing well on the NLN pre nursing exam can balance out low a low GPA. They do drop the minuses and the pluses. So yes a B- becomes a B, but I'd definitely strive to keep all your nursing pre req courses B and above. Be aware though that there are many applicants for HBSON. They did increase the incoming class size from 60 to 100 recently but understand that the more competitive your grades, the higher your chances.

The first semester of nursing school was the most expensive. Books alone were about $2,000 so consider buying used online or from the year ahead of you and/or making copies. Uniforms and your nursing school equipment (stethoscope, pen light, bandage scissors etc) are yet another expense but it varied from person to person being that prices are different for different brand of stethoscopes.

Once you begin I would greatly encourage you to keep on top of you readings for lecture. And in the cases you can't complete it all (which will happen), use the class notes as guides in reading. Every professor has their own teaching styles, so understand that some may be more direct with their expectations of what they want you to know than others. There are changes being made to the lab. They recently purchased simulation dummies and there are plans to buy more so that will greatly improve the lab experience. The lab techs always did their best to set up meaningful labs but some of the equipment is a bit old. Hunter doesn't have the funding of private universities.

Nursing school is time consuming so be prepared to make sacrifices

We had some pretty good clinical sites around the city (Cornell, Columbia, NYU etc) and I'd strongly encourage you to keep in contact with your clinical instructors because when the time comes you to job hunt, they are very helpful. Oh and do a summer internship. It differentiates you from the rest of the new grad class that graduates with only clinical experience.

Good luck
