How to deal with nurses who respond they are busy when you delegate
Thank you all for your comments. Today, I brought the subject to DON and they are going to start to inservice the nurses. I also met with the nurses and informed them that I will do a time study on each one of them to find out how they use their time. I am planning to follow each one of them and see how they use their time. As far as the work, I am not complaining, I love to work and will help them as much as I can. However, it is really frustrating when you see nothing is being done as far as charting, and they are always complaining even if they have 10 patients each.

How to deal with nurses who respond they are busy when you delegate
Thank you for your response. I am a manager on subacute unit. I apologize if I sounded as a nurse who knows it all but I do not present myself as one. I constantly evaluate my performance, and always find something new to read about and learn. What you would think about a nurse with the following examples. I am talking about a nurse who have at least 20 years experience. For example, a patient fell and is on the floor, the nurse will not consider it as an emergency and continue with passing the meds. The nurse will flag any labs for the doctor to seeat a later time, even when the potassium is very low. The nurse wil come and ask me what to do with BP meds even when the BP is 80/40. I can give many examples. I will explain to the nurse what she should do, the next day the situation will be the same. I have met with the staff already, but I am planning to meet with the nurses alone. Thank you for your help.

How to deal with nurses who respond they are busy when you delegate
Good evening, I am a new manager with only one year experience and over the last year I changed my job. Currently, I am responsible for 41 employees, andI can say I have good RN/patient census. One nurse is responsible for maximum of 15 patients. Here I can say that we are not always full. I find my CNAs very compassionate, and caring. They listen and look for my opinion and advice. The problems I am having is with the nurses. I constantly find their lack of knowledge. I offer to teach them, however I feel that they do not care, and do not want to improve. I gave to all their job description, the only thing they are concerned with is to pass their meds. They lack critical thingking, do not know how to prioritize. One of their responsibility is to create care plans for their patients. When I remind them what else is needed to be done for their patients, the response I get is, "I am too busy or No, it is too much." I did written verbal warnings, however somehow this does not work. As a result, I do all of thier paperwork. It is overwhelming for one person to do all, especially when I have families that are very demanding and expect from me to update them about their relatives on a daily basis. Please, help me. I am willing to do what it is needed to be done. In addition, I do not have the support from HR who made me aware that the facility is not in the position to fire anyone.

Need Help to make a decision: SHOULD I TAKE THE NEW JOB OR STAY
I am a manager on subacute unit for 8 months with excellent performance. I was first a regular nurse on the unit and got promoted as a manager. It was hard in the beginning, however all my staff members respect me and work with me. As per my DON, I was able to achieve a lot in a very short time. I was making more money as a regular nurse because I was doing overtime. Recently I found out that my DON is leaving, and I started looking for a new job. Some people say that when new DON comes, she or he comes with a team. I found the same position in a nother LTC. They offered me a lot more money for the same job. I went to talk to the DON, she begged me to stay and said she will speak with her bosses to match it. I promised, I will wait until she gives me a result. I already got the offer from the other place, I just need to sign it. Today, the DON came to talk to me. She said that the corporate are still looking for salaries in my position with the experience I have, and have not decided yet. She said I should do as I feel it is best for me. Today, I also founf out that the management position I was offerred WAS NOT filled for 9 months. I was wondering why? I don't know. The new facility has 5 stars, mine only 2. PLEASE, PLEASE HELP. WHAT SHOULD I DO??? THANKS TO ALL.

New Manager, needs help to deal with staff
Hi, recently I was promoted to nurse manager/director of subacute unit. On couple of occasions, I've noticed that CNAs do not follow my orders, and I tried to ignore it, I thought maybe I am overreacting, however today I had an incident that I really need to address. I had a pt who was potential for elopement, I asked the CNAs to observe the pt for couple of minutes until I come back and apply watchmate on the pt. All CNAs laughed at me, and walked away, the oldest of the CNAs come back and asked me what exactly did I asked them to do, she walked away and did not listen to what I was going to say. When physical therapy saw what had happened two of them offered to watch the elevator until I came back. A watchmate was placed on the pt. I had to leave the floor for a meeting, when I came back I was told that while I was away, the social worker told the nurse providing care for the pt to take the watchmate off, and they did while I was away. Tommorrow I am going to have a meeting. I need help. Thank you.

promoted to supervisor on subacute nurse with lower salary
Hi, everyone. I recently was promoted from charge nurse to supervisor on my unit (subacute). I accepted without signing. On the interview the Neighborhood Director said she will adjust my salary. On my recent paycheck I saw the salary was lower than I used to make as a charge nurse. I thought at first that this is a mistake, but when I checked with HR, I found out it was the salary the DON gave to HR. I want to go back to my previous position because it is not worthed. The DON did not talk to me yet, however I was approached by a supervisor today who warned me to shut my mouth, because the nursing world is very small, and I never know I might never be able to find another job. I was also told that my previous position might ne filled. How can a position be filled when I am still employed, and noone discussed the conditions for my new position. I never signed a contract also. I felt threathened. Please, give me advise what to do? I am meeting with DON tommorrow.

No experience, no job. What will happen in two years?
Thanks to all for the reply. I've send so many resumes but I did not get even a single response back. I found a job in healthcare that is not related to nursing but has a good pay. I really don't know what to do. I am a widow with two kids and I can't stay without a job even a single day. However, I am scared that if I accept the job I will never have the chance of working as a nurse. What should I do? Please, help.

No experience, no job. What will happen in two years?
Hi, everyone. I was wondering if a graduate nurse is not able to find a job lets say in two years, will she or he be ever able to be hired as a nurse? I am getting really scared. Some of the people commented that after six months of graduation, if you are still on the market the chances of finding a job is close to zero. Please, post a comment.
