Hello everyone :)

I am trying (again) to research attending nursing school to be an RN and I am totally lost.

To be an RN, do you need to get an ADN?

The only school by me does this in 6 quarters and that doesn't seem long enough?

I thought it took 4 years?

Also do I need to attend regular college first for the cores like Math 101, Eng 101 etc..?

I am so lost and starting from ground zero, thanks if you can help

PS- Does anyone know if we pay for school for one year, and do well, can us older grown ups then get the Hope Scholarship?

You mentioned the Hope Scholarship, do you live in GA?

Silly question...it's posted in the GA forum. Anyway, as mentioned the ADN can be done in 2 years at a CC, but certain prereq's need to be completed before being admitted into a program.

Yes- the ADN is the entry level degree for the RN.

A BSN takes 4 years, but an ADN may not take as long. 6 quarters may not be that much timewise, but you may be cramming in lots of credit hours in those quarters.

Would you possibly mean the Hope credit? The Hope credit is a tax credit. You can file for this on the tax year you begin school. It is separate from financial aid.

You can attend a local community college to get all the courses you need. some programs require that you complete all of the general ed courses before you officially enter the nursing program, and some do not. Your best bet would be to check out the websites of your local programs to see their requirements.

NO, you do not need to get an ADN first to be an RN. It is in your best interest to go directly to a 4 yr university and go straight through to get your BSN. The economy is really tough for new grads to get jobs and hospitals now prefer BSN prepared RN's, infact many job descriptions will say ADN accepted, BSN preferred.

So if you get your ADN and someone with a BSN are up against you for the job with the same experience background, chances are the BSN will get the job. But that is just my opinion, ultimately, you are the one who have to decide which route is best for you. Good luck!

Listen to SNHoward. She is dead on. You can be an RN with your ADN, but by all means, the way nursing is going, you will eventually need your BSN. Get it while you're young. Good luck. :)
