Question about becoming a PCT while in nursing school

In new posting comments but lont time reader of this site. I would like to post a question regarding PCT. Im currently taking nursing prereqs at Hunter CUNY. Somebody adviced me to get certified as PCT and try to gain emploment as such,as a way to increase my chances of eventually getting hired as a RN after getting my BSN. Can i increase my chances doing this.?

Yes, because you will have health care experience to put on your resume. You also could be improving your chances by already being employed at the place where you end up with an RN job. In-house employees are almost always considered before others in the hiring process.

In general, working as a PCT at an employer where you hope to work as an RN is the way to go. As caliotter3 said, in-house employees are considered first, and this is true. I work as a nurse tech at a teaching hospital and we are given the opportunity to interview for RN jobs first before they start to consider outside candidates. Just because we are given the opportunity first does not mean we will get hired as an RN, we just have a better shot at it.
