Q on NZ and Australian license

Published

My wife will graduate (hopefully) this March '08 and we might abandon our plans in going to the US due to the retrogression. We are now looking at NZ and Australia as possible alternatives. I have a few questions on how a fresh graduate from the Philippines can be able to work in either country. Here goes:

1. I understand a Filipina locally-licensed nurse will have to enroll in a bridging course that will take 6 months. If my wife goes to a bridging school in NZ and pass the NZ state boards, will she be able to apply as an RN in Australia as well even without experience? How about vice versa?

2. We have four kids, ages 11, 8, 7, and 3. If she gets a job as a nurse in either country, will we be able to get immigrant visas right away so I can get a job myself?

That's all for now. I may have a few more questions later.

Thank you in advance.

You stand a better chance of getting jobs if you have experience. There are a couple of good threads here about how to go about doing a challenge test. Otherwise you will have to do a bridging course and that might take 6 months and is very expensive.

As for other jobs - Australia has a skills shortage - if you have any kind of skill (even something like carpentry) then your chances of getting a visa are much much better than if you come on the possiblity of doing a bridging course,

thanks for the reply.

will attending a bridging course and getting a nursing license (assuming she passes the state exam) guarantee a job for her in Australia?

I have two years experience as flight operations officer in an airline here in PI from 1996-1998 until i put up my own business. btw, my wife is a licensed accountant (Cert. Public accountant) here in PI but she hasn't been practicing since we got married in '96. what do you think our chances are in getting immigrant visas based on our employment record?

once again, thank you. appreciate it.

Write ALL your experiences down. Personally judging by relatives who are accountants - she is probably just as likely to pick up a job as an accountant as a nurse (and will possibly make more money!!) The more experience you have the more likely it is that you will get visa's.

Foreign graduate accountants outside of USA, Ireland, New Zealand, UK usually have to take around three to four bridging subjects to be considered as graduate accountants (considered as new graduate from an Australian university) in Australia (It does not matter how many years of experience they have). Then they have to take and pass another 6 CPA/CA subjects to complete the academic requirements of the professional accounting organisations in Australia. Then another three years of required relevant Australian accounting experience (experience overseas are not considered) in order to be qualified as a full Australian CPA or Chartered accountant(CA). You see, it is not easy to become a full CPA/CA here in Australia-you need to pass the 6 professional subjects and to have at least three years of relevant Australian accounting experience (two requirements even Australian accounting graduates need to fulfill). It is not like in the Phils where after graduation, you take the board exam and if you pass it you are already a full CPA. So it looks like your wife has more chance of being recognised as a nurse than as an accountant here in Australia. She just have to take and pass the foreign nurses bridging course to get an Australian license as a nurse.

thank you for the replies. w appreciate it.
