2 pts in the same OR room?!?!?!

Specialties Operating Room

OK, heres the story...a new nurse came to work with us and mentioned that this one place (in cincinati perhaps?) would put 2 carpal tunnels in the SAME OR ROOM and the surgeon would do one then rescrub and the do the other and like an assembly line pump out as many CTR as possible.

so my NM got wind of this and trys to help these docs walk on water so she of course thinks its a great idea to at least see if they can do it, and get some symatics done. the doc loves the fact that shes doing this and of course he wants to pump out as many CTR as he can. WOW

now me and basically all the other nurses have a multitude of issues and feelings about this and we can see many issues. does anyone else do this? my friend called the health dept to see what they said (behind NM back) and they didnt have a direct answer for her and wanted her number to get back to her, but she didnt give out our number and hung up. i would love to see everyones thoughts and feelings. BTW it is a small independantly owned (meaning the docs own the building/company) surgery center that is within a huge building which contains doc offices(the ones that own the company of course) and a huge PT area and dept. we have 3 OR suites, 3 pre-op bays, 6 PACU bays.

There was quite a gap between the start of this thread and when it was resumed. I'd love to hear from the OP about what has happened in the interim.

I am so ashamed to be part of this industry these days, where $$$ is the driving force. In the face of such intense pressure to focus on speed/increased revenue, it is increasingly difficult to dig in my heels and insist on conducting my practice in a way that is truly patient-focused.

The greed I see on the part of many of these surgeons is staggering. I came to this private practice hospital after many years in teaching hospitals (salaried faculty) and this different attitude has been terribly hard to live with. I really like surgery itself, but If I were younger I would seriously consider making a total career change because I'm so disappointed with what has become of this industry. I feel that Nursing has less influence than ever; the Suits control everything.. :o

Even doing eye cases, we still had two rooms going, one was getting ready while the surgeon worked in the other room. They alternated between both rooms and everything was kept as it should be.

Sorry, but no respect for anyone that wishes to treat patients like that.

Wonder how they would change if they were the patient or it was their family member?

Bet you that there would not be two patients in the same room.

Yeah, we have two rooms for cysto and on some days the Doc hops back and forth from room to room when he has quick cases one after the other. But we do each room with a separate crew, and by the book.

A few of our orthopedists each routinely have 2 staggered rooms of total joints on a given day, each room fully staffed so there is virtually no turnover time at all. I have seen one of these guys do as many as eleven totals in one day. And they still whine about money all the time.....:twocents: At least we're using separate rooms for these patients - so far...

But I've gotten off-topic, I guess. Sorry.

I work in an OR in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern KY area. I am pretty sure this has not gone on here. I just cannot imagine this is done anywhere. Like someone else said, what about HIV, Hep C, MRSA....I would consult AORN on that one.
