Pt. Education Poster Ideas

Published

Hello everyone,

I am a first year ADN student & we have been assigned a poster/presentation project and I am having a hard time coming up with ideas. We have to design a poster & present the poster to our clinical group as if we are speaking to a patient & providing education to them about something r/t a diagnosis of theirs or a health promotion topic. I don't want to do something that's been done 100 times over (diabetic diet, etc.) any ideas? :)

**OOPS just noticed you didn't want to do diabetics** Ignore my comment below. I would do a little research first and then base your assignment accordingly. You want a subject that you can actually find information on. First research then make a decision. Good luck.

Different types of diabetes. You may want to focus on Type 1 and 2 since they are probably most common. Or you could focus on Juvenile Diabetes (Type 1). Tons of info and you could distinguish between the signs and symptoms and etiology of Type 1 and 2. Also, include a diabetic meal plan or exercise plan.

I recommend doing something in your field of interest. So is it med/surg, critical care, ER, OB, Peds ect.?

I wanted to steer clear of diabetes because that seems to be what everyone is doing. I thought about discussing ways for patients to take control of their health care.. Focus on barriers between pts & health care workers. For example, encouraging pts to ask the nurse to be in the room when the dr comes so that she can explain anything they're unclear about once he leaves.. Being sure to have a list of questions with you for your appt so you don't forget anything.. If you don't see the nurse/etc wash their hands, don't be afraid to ask them to wash them in front of you... Etc etc

I want to pursue emergency nursing, but we have to do something r/t a dx we've encountered during clinicals this far (which has only been 6 wks at LTC so there's nothing interesting) or we can do an area of health promotion that could apply to a pt we've had. That's why I was kinda aiming toward the health promo.. Nobody wants to hear me beat a dead horse talking about CHF, diabetes, HTN, etc. haha

Got ya. Sounds like you have an idea and can really expand upon it. When I was in nursing school we did a project similar and we did ours on sunburns (it was approaching summer). We showed different types of sunscreen, how long the SPF was really good for, how burns affected the skin, stats on skin cancer from sun damage. It was fun. :-)

If it is something you really are interested in then you will do well. Have fun with it.

That's a great idea :) I wasn't sure if my idea was good.. But if you think it's ok I'll go for it lol. I like to mix things up instead of doing/talking about the same old things all the time. :)

Welp that kinda stinks only having 6 weeks of LTC to essentially choose from! I did a HUGE project on this topic but mine was prevention of teenage pregnancy (I'm precepting in the NICU now so my interest is that) maybe do something related to MI, CVA, TBIs (surely one of your residents has a past medical hx of one of those?)

Ooh yeah MI & CVA

You'll see them in the ER and will be super prepped on transfer/discharge teaching... Just food for thought!

Absolutely, think outside the box! As long as you are following your guidelines then go for it! I'm sure your instructor will appreciate something "fresh" and different. Let us know how you do.

Thanks guys! I have visited this site for the past few years but never actually registered & posted anything.. It really is like a community! The support is much appreciated. :)
