Curious to hear opinions on this scenario...
Long term dementia patient. DNR in place. Patient chokes. Heimlich initially unsuccessful and pt codes. What should be done for this patient?

I found this on the NY Dept of Health website:
" Relief of choking caused by a foreign body is usually appropriate, although if breathing has stopped, ventilation should not be assisted."

As a LTC surveyor, I have seen this happen. You will code the patient. Read the fine print on the DNR order...It will lead you what to do. Also, check with Red Cross recommendations....same thing. Before you get caught up in the situation, maybe do your due diligence as this situation could easily happen.
