Psychiatric nursing Jobs for nurse with foreign nursing experience

Published

Hi, I was a psychiatric nurse in Iran and I am currently preparing to take the certification exam so I can practice in America. Once I pass the exam where should I apply for a job since everyone wants 2 years experience? Once I get a job are there any 10 month nursing positions that will allow me to travel back home to Iran for visits? Any help or information would be appreciated. Thanks!

I can't answer your question about where to apply since many, many American nurses are currently asking the same question. Jobs are scarce in most areas of the country.

It is highly doubtful (likely impossible) that you will find a 10-month position with a facility. Employment in the US is traditionally year-round. An exception would be to seek employment with a travel nurse agency; however, those positions rarely go to inexperienced nurses.

Sorry to be Debbie Downer, but sometimes it is best to understand the reality of a situation. Please spend some time on the forums, reading other threads about the current employment situation in the field of nursing here in the US.

Many psychiatric hospitals hire nurses out of school with no experience. I'm sure you would be marketable since you do have experience, just not in the USA. I cant speak for the 10 month thing.

With retrogression and the demand for visas outweighed by what is actually allocated you will have a several year wait for a visa allowing you to live and work in the US once you have found a employer willing to go the immigration route with you and wait several years. I doubt you will find a employer willing to give you 2 months off every year as normal US allocation to start with is I believe 2 weeks year but you are not loosing anything by asking

Thank you so much for the quick and honest replies. Luckily I should have my U.S. citizenship in 3-6 months so the immigration issue will be moot but time off, even unpaid appears to be an issue. Thanks again. :)
