Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner-Family of Adult

Published

I am in the process of looking at schools to pursue psych NP. I am not sure which age group I wanted to work with when I graduate, and therefore for sure whether I should apply for adult or family. If you become accredited in family psych NP can I work with all age groups? If I sit the ANCC in adult psych can I only work with adults? Any advice would be appreciated

I know this is old but I'd be interested in hear responses ::bump::

My understanding is that the FPMHNP is able to work across the board with various age groups. A focus on adult mental health will more than likely exclude children. You may want to contact your state BON to get specifics. I plan to peruse the family route. Good luck to you. Do you have a preference for age group?

I'd go with family. For me, that'd be best because I'd do just about nothing but medication management around here. I wouldn't want to do child therapy at all, but if you had to in order to survive you could.

I am also looking at this program. Graduating with BSN in December and hoping to beging PMHNP program in June 2012. I am going the family route rather than adult simply because it makes us more marketable. You can work in any environment, whether it's exclusively adult, exclusively pediatric, or family practice. I'd like to know what environment is going to serve me best to work in while I'm working on advanced practice degree. I don't really want to work on a MedSurg floor, but it seems to be the most practical place for keeping clinical skills sharp. Any insight?

What is it that you think you'll forget, and why would you be using most of those skills as a psych NP anyway?
