Great - thanks so much!!!! :yeah:

Hi Deb,

Sorry to bother, but I guess my main question about becoming an RN (from what I have seen come up on these boards A LOT) is that )and I guess no one really knows because that is why everyone is so fearful about "new Grads" right now. but after pre-req's and NET and choosing a school (because I will have my pick right? :) is do you think I will get a problem getting a job after I graduate? I know that if I stay in Atlanta I wont because I looked on all of the main hospital websites and they are hiring but I will just have a lot more competition then before, but at least I am alreat a licensed esthetician and have worked with Dr's of several different types before and now I am strictly working as an M.A. for a Dr. at Emory and he is highly reputable so I know that will help too. My other choice would be teaching but I would rather be a nurse and since I will be a BSN there will be teaching options for me down the road as there are so many more avenues for nurses then there are teachers.

This will be the only time in my life I can do this so I have to decide pretty quickly and get focused but I left this website up on our desktop the other day and now my husband is afraid I will sell or lose my house to pursue my dream of nursing and of couse he read a little becasue he was excited I had finally made up my mind, even though it will be a great sacrafice of my time and income for our family, but for a measly 4 semesters, but of course all that he saw was hospitals :not hiring no new greads" and things f that nature etc.

Please let me know what you (or anyone else) thinks is going to happen to the New Grad American Nurse by the time I graduate which may not be until 20012-20013? I have ine thing in my favor and that is that we wont have family here by that time so we are willing to (and want to ) move to another part of the country by then.

Let me know your throught and what you would say if you were in my position...

Thank you!

Christine

I don't think nurses will EVER have much trouble finding jobs... at least not anytime soon. I know now is not the best time to find a job, even in nursing, but if you're willing to be a little flexible (and especially if you're willing to relocate), I really think you'll be fine. When I started nursing school in the early 90's, there was a "shortage," and they were saying nurses had their pick of jobs. Well, by '94, when I graduated from nursing school, I remember one of my professors telling us if we got a job offer, we would be very fortunate. That was in Tennessee (Nashville area). I applied for EVERYTHING, and WAS offered a job, but before I could start, we found out we were moving to FL. Got to Pensacola, and heard the same thing... there just wasn't a nursing shortage anymore. I called around, and nursing recruiters basically told me they had plenty of experienced nurses to choose from, so I'd probably have to start in med/surg. So, I did..... I took a job in a nursing home, and shortly thereafter, a hospital called offering me a position on a medical unit. I am glad it happened that way, because I got some great basic experience under my belt, and within a few years, I wasn't a "new nurse" anymore, and things got a little better as far as job opportunities in various specialities. PLUS, the nursing shortage was starting all over again. SOOOO... what I'm saying is you may not have any job you want falling into your lap, but get your experience, work hard, and it WILL pay off. And you WILL find jobs out there. Maybe not your dream job, but jobs are out there. At least that's MY 2cents.... Maybe others have other opinions???
