Just looking for some insight on a practice question because as I was doing them I noticed a few where the answers were super outlandish to me.Which would you choose? I chose A but the answer key says it's B attachment.php?attachmentid=22912&stc=1

Specializes in NICU, RNC.

According to Peplau's theory, here are the definitions of those roles:

"Surrogate: serving as a substitute for another such as a parent or a sibling

Counselor: promoting experiences leading to health for the client such as expression of feelings"

Hildegard E. Peplau - Theoretical Foundations of Nursing

In this instance, the nurse is verbalizing caring, thus it is the surrogate role.

Psych is like learning a foreign language. It was my least fave class by far, especially in clinical! Good luck!

Wait, what? The nurse isn't acting as a substitute for anyone and the definition of surrogate says nothing about caring

This is where critical thinking comes in. Family members care. When the nurse is acting as a surrogate family member, they are exhibiting caring behaviors. This is what is described in the question as stated, "I care about what happens to you."

The counselor role would entail the nurse saying something like "tell me how you feel about...."

Do you see the distinction? A lot of critical thinking goes into answering these types of questions.
