Hi all-
I am a US psych nurse (BSN) with 8 years of inpatient psych experience. I am thinking of heading over to Australia for a year or so and working there. How hard do you think it would be for me to find a job? Would it be advisable for me to find one on my own or to go through an agency? What areas would have the most opportunity in this area? Any other comments you may like to add would be very appreciated...
Thanks,
Christine

Since the majority of hospitals here are public hospitals owned and funded by the indivisual state goverments it is easier often to apply direct. Where do you want to work?
I honestly don't know. I know very little about Australia - although I am starting to do some reading. I am outdoorsy and like to hike, bike etc. I am social but am not too big on clubs/bars. So I certainly don't need a big metropolis to keep me happy. I won't have a car so that is probably a factor as I think I will need to rely on public transportation. I want to take in as much of Australia as I can. I am very open to suggestions, opinions on different areas.

[it will very much depend on your preferences.Experienced Psych Nurses are held in high regard, and the opportunities here are great. However as far as I know, there are always vacancies in country areas, with the concentratioon of services in Capital cities, the country ares are the poor cousins. So if you like a rural lifestyle, and the opportunity to travel and experience a new culture, the jobs are here. I believe the competition for jobs in the cities is fierce.
Knowing that our state has a shortage of psych nurses let me sell you on QLD
Can't do better than here (and don't listen to all those from other states:p)
Let's see, we got rainforests, white water rafting, places so beautiful that they will take your breath away and on top of all of that we have the Great Barrier Reef - Scuba diving!!! Or even just snorkelling - nothing beats it.
Transport - even regional centres have pretty decent public transport and most of the metropolitan centres have public transport laid on. Heck when I lived in Rockhampton a lot of staff cycled to and from work.
The QLD website to cruise is http://thinknursing.com but there is a site like this for every state in Australia.
