Hi everybody: maybe someone has experience with promethazine plain syrup prescribed for cough. The situation was that I saw one of my geriatric patients at home, 80 y.o. female with hx of CVA to the right side with imobility to the left side that transfers with human assistance to the chair and recliner, also has an indwelling Foley cath and wears diappers for bowel incontinence. The said pt had flu like symptoms for about a week, and the Md ordered promethazine plain syrup 1 tea spoon q 6 hours for cough. that called my attention. On the other side, as expected the lady was having trouble moving bowells. When I explained the family member that it was a side effect of the ' cough' syrup she told me well she's doing fine now so I think I could discontinue it as the MD told me to do. (apparently the MD didn't explained the side effects to the family member) Has anybody seen this prescription before? what do you think? Thank you
I was prescribed this for myself for cough and found it to be helpful. No side effects. Only ever had one patient prescribed it and don't remember. Believe it was PRN and didn't give it.

Thank you. I remember that Promethar shouldn't be given if the patient might be constipated or has oclusion risk. tha's why it called my attention, bu i don't remember as prescribed gor cough but most likely for nausea. Thank you all
