How are you liking the MSN program at Grand Canyon? I've been thinking of applying. :)

Funding in Florida is one of the worst in the United States. It's really sad. I worked in an acute mental hospital and many people could not afford help and the waiting list for free or reduced services was months, meaning frequent re-admissions. A lot of people, nurses included, are still very ignorant on mental health. After working in the mental health hospital, I went to work in a regular hospital on the ortho unit but we go a couple psych patients. Many nurses did not know how to properly care for these patients. Many think they chose to be how they are. But no one would chose to be bipolar or schizophrenic. Definitely more education is needed. May is also brain cancer awareness month. I had never heard of glioblastoma until my brother was diagnosed. It's a horrible disease that also doesn't get much attention. Please read up on that too if you have some time.

It took me a while to land a hospital job. I worked in an ALF and then a psych hospital before landing a job in a med-surge/ortho unit. They hospital I applied to had a "Transitions program" for RNs that were RNs for a while with no hospital experience. Do any near-by hospitals offer that sort of thing? Good luck!!

I wear a white coat because it's part of the requirements for the job. I am a hospice admission nurse. Dress is business causal and white coat.

I got my RN license when I was 21. My BSN when I was 23.

I just recently stated working for hospice as an admissions nurse. I'm only PRN but the full time staff work 4 10 hour shifts and 1 weekend a month. That sounds pretty good to me compared to all the on call the CM has to do.

I work PRN and if I work 40 hours a week I get taxed or taken away $8 for every hour I work. It's insane!! Of course, I'm single with no kids, but still. I get sad when my check is $560 less biweekly because of all the taxes!!!!!

I would have like to be an archeologist and discover hidden civilization and such but nursing seemed more realistic. [emoji40]

At the hospital I work, during they busy season, they offer a similar incentive during the busy season. If you don't call out at all from December to April, you get a $1000 bonus, plus $200 extra for every extra shift you pick up plus the overtime. They offer you mention doesn't sound so good to me.

Yes. This is my first hospital job and I agree that management doesn't known or doesn't want to make it better. They are offering $10,000 sign on bonuses for experienced RNs. A slap in the face for all the seasoned nurses that love nursing (and have been with the hospital for a while) but increasingly frustrated with the situation.

Yea, I totally agree! It seems to be more about the money and making sure the patient is "happy" with our service than safe with our skills. Anyhow, if I have an abnormal vital sign given to me by a tech with a PRN med available I always recheck it myself before administering anything.

I've been working at my current hospital for 3 months and I have seen so many people quit already. We are always short staffed. But they do offer some incentives. $150 to $200 if you come in when they call you on your day off. Bonuses ($1000) for not calling off on the busy season (December to May I believe) and they give others bonuses too. It doesn't seem to work to well though.

I work in Florida and PCT insert foley on all floors. Not NG tubes though. One PCT told me in her last job she could do more like draw blood and I forget what else.

Go to a community college. I graduated with my ASN and became a RN at 21. I got my BSN from a state university ( University of Central Florida) and about to start my MSN. I am now 25 and have NO student loans. I probably paid no more than $15,000 my schooling so far. I had a little scholarship for community college and worked as a RN to pay for my BSN. Why pay so much and then have to worry about making ends meet?

I already have a BSN. So BSN to MSN program.

When I worked in psych the most common emergency meds ( or ETOs) were IM Haldol, Benadryl and Ativan. But we also used Thorazine, Zyprexa and Cogentin and sometimes Abilify. We gave a lot of Invega shots. They are long acting and only taken monthly. I think the most common pill I saw was Seroquel. I think just about everyone was on some dose of that. We gave Latuda to pregnant patients. Good luck.

I've been a nurse for 3 years and just recently landed my first hospital job. A lot of clinical things were new to me. I had previously as a RN not hung an IV bag or started any. Put in only one foley, etc. I had worked an an ALF previously so I am comfortable with my meds and blood pressure and calling doctors and such. But everyday I am learning and there is so much to learn in a hospital. Most nurse are helpful some are not, But the prior experience did help me. I only got 3 weeks of training on the floor but still ask for help. If you really want to work in a hospital. I say start applying!You never know... It might take you a while to land a job and while you look continue to find opportunities to learn more at your current job. Good luck!

I finally had a friend put in a good word for me and got hired as part of a transition program for nurses who had been nurses for a while but with no hospital experience. My wages are based upon the years I've been a nurse and the fact the I have a BSN. Is there anything similar in your area? It sounds ridiculous that you would be treated as a new grad when you have all those hands on skills.

18 when I decided to be a nurse. Became a RN at 21. BSN at 23. I'm 25 now and start my MSN program in April. I definitely don't think you are too old. Go for it!

I didn't see too many private parts when I worked in a psych hospital!
