  1. atropine drops sl....dries up secretions to help stop the gurgling soum nds also helps :)
  2. We don't get hard copies anymore either...but when we did I used to carry mine in a plastic pocket on my work badge until my boss asked me to take it out and put it in a safe place telling me a story about how someone had stolen her friends nursing license and got a job pretending to be this nurse...there was lots of red tape for her friend....
  3. Yes Mcknis...if its a closed wound you certainly do not want to do a wet to dry. And remember you need an order for wet to dry dressings. The thought process or at least what I remember being taught long ago is you pack it wet and as it dries the dead icky stuff (like my nursing terminology..im tired im sorry) adheres to the dry dressing and when you pull it out you are performing a type of debridement so the wound heals from the inside out. If you were to put a wet to dry dressing on a closed wound you will be making a breeding ground for more bacteria and can then make a closed wound an open one. Hope this makes sense and again im tired and sorry if it doesnt.
  4. I had a pt tell me the other day "You are paid to wait on me hand and foot" my response "No maam I am not. I am paid to help you get better and you can open your own straw. Thats helping you get better so you can go home and take care of yourself" uggghhhh!!! Just reminding myself how much I love being a nurse regardless of the nonsense that comes with it
  5. At my facility your badge would like like this: Elizabeth "Liza" your last name,RN. It is the lewis blackman law that requires your legal name on your badge here.
  6. Noone under 19 and if you have any s/s of the flu
  7. No Im sorry I cant stop doing chest compressions on this patient to turn your mothers television down. You cant see the down arrow? (yes this seriously happened. The daughter walked right into the room where we were coding a pt and told me her mothers television was too loud and would I mind just running it to turn it down? Afterall it would only take a second....OMG are you kidding me????
  8. Had mine, all I got was a sore arm for a few days.
  9. LOL so do I. Its funny....hey CONGRATS!!!! Its an awesome feeling isnt it?? Good luck to you
  10. My hospital at this time is not allowing anyone under the age of 19 to enter unless to visit a very critical pt. This is due to the swine flu breakout. Otherwise normally anyone can enter at anytime.
  11. We ask name and dob which is checked against the emar then we scan their armband. If you are on the wrong emar it will tell you and wont let you go any further.
  12. We use barcode scanning at my facility. I know it has saved me a med error or two....
  13. My facility is mandating both vaccines. There are 3 reasons you dont get it 1) is medical (allergic to eggs, hx of gilliaine barre) 2) religous reasons and I forget the 3rd but if you have these accomodations you get to wear a mask every minute you are on hospital property except your 30 minute lunch break...otherwise end result you get terminated. I dont agree either but jobs are hard to find right now and some battles arent worth fighting at this moment so I got both of mine.
  14. Our policy is almost the same. Except the eyewear. We have also been told that "according to manufacturer" you can reuse masks as long as they are not soiled. We were told to put them in a paper bag though not our pockets. There is a shortage of N95 masks already (1 in particular I forget the name but its the one we used most frequently). If a pt is suspected to have the flu they are placed on contact and droplet so in we go with gloves, gowns and masks.
  15. I dont mean to sound stupid but what is capnography/ETCO2?
  16. My facility requires both the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1. There are only 2 ways to get away with not getting it, allergic to eggs, w/drs documentation, religious belief w/clergy documentation, and these people have to wear masks the entire time they are on hospital property except their 1/2 hour lunch break. Anyone who flatly refuses to be vaccinated will ultimately be relieved from their duties (fired). All the hospitals in our area have the same policies in effect now. They are all going with whatever the SC Assoc of Hospitals and the CDC/DHEC reccomend. The county I work in has the highest incidence of + H1N1 flu cases. The schools are talking about closing for a couple weeks.
  17. Oh honey dont feel stupid. This happens to the best of us. Females are harder then males to get catheters into especially the older they are. With practice comes perfection. This was your first try. Be kind to yourself and give yourself a break. Just last week my boss (whos been an RN for 15 yrs and myself RN for 3 years) attempted to put a f/c in a 94 yo female w/fractured hip. We had her in trendelenberg even almost standing on our heads in her bed and we couldnt for the life of either of us get it where it belonged....
  18. I started my prereqs at 33 and graduated nursing school at the ripe ole age of 42 1/2 years old. I think it was the smartest thing I did to wait until I was older cuz Ill tell you what when I was younger theres no way they would have been able to tie me down long enough to take any of it seriously or to have put the hours into studying it took me. Youll be fine. Good luck!!
  19. We are also supposed to cut the bands off as they are on the way out of the door. They say its because if something happens on the way home and they end up at our mother hospital or back here someone might forget to put a new name band on them and use the old one...ummm ok...new band or old isnt their name and dob gonna be the same???
  20. Im in SC at my hospital all nurses wear a combo of either wine/white/wine and white. The CNAs/Techs wear carribean blue and white but not all white. All the depts are color coded and the only ones who can wear all white are the nurses. Its supposed to be less confusing to pts/families so they know who their nurse is...LOL@that since they still ask the housekeeper for a pain pill and the tray passers to empty their bedpans....
  21. I wear mine on my badge and have for almost 3 years now. It has fallen off a couple times but I havent lost it yet (*knock on wood*)
  22. I too agree with taking Kaplan. I did and passed the first time surprisingly. I was prepared to not pass the first time and take it a second because I have awful test anxiety. Good luck to you!!!
  23. I have the limited edition breast cancer pink one. My name is engraved with a little message from my ex who bought it for me. I have managed to not loose it in over 3 years. LOL
  24. I graduated in Aug 2006 passed my boards Oct 2006 and am was 41 when I graduated. I have been working on the same Med/Surg floor since I started as a tech while in nursing school. I am now the charge nurse. Never thought I would like Med/Surg, the ER has always held my heart, but I love my job!!
  25. I have been trying to get connected with a flu clinic here in Myrtle Beach, SC if anyone knows of any. But it sounds like a lot of fun. I have done the flu clinics at the hospital I work for though.
