  1. to me, the term "baby nurse" means Pediatrics.---Where I spent the majority of my career and loved it! So, it's a term of endearment to me. Don't let ANYONE belittle you if you take offense at this name. You are a NURSE, PERIOD! I don't give a flyin blank how long you've been in or how new you are. Again...YOU ARE A NURSE! Anyone who uses this, to belittle you, is an A**, and not worth your time. Take care of your patients, and don't let someone who is obviously self lacking in esteem, bother your mind one bit! A nurse I would have respect for, would be one who's been in the field longer and is willing to share her knowledge through example, to you. Take a breath, I'm sure you're doing fine.
  2. Thank you. I tend to agree. There are no longer any LPN refresher courses in Wilmington NC area; but they are still offering an LPN degree course @ CFCC (cape fear comm coll), go figure? Those nurses have no idea what's in store for them down the road. And yes...the age thing. ;( Thank you for your honesty.
  3. here's my deal.... I worked for 18 years in pedies in Upstate NY....loved it, but got tired of the snow. Loved to Va Beach..........ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT THERE, but married a guy who didn't want big city traffic...he's in sales and lived in a beautiful golf community. Problem: golf vs. beach. We moved to Wilmington,NC (compromise on my part..I truly love VAB!) So, I had gone from working to not working...10 years....DON'T EVER DO THIS! Now, I can't get a job. It's truly a good ol' boy system down here...plus now the EMR...which I know I could do in a NY minute...but, no one will hire me. I had excellent reviews/letter of recommendation in Pedies and from the ER in Va... All I am asking for is a chance...if anyone knows anyone who knows anyone.....Please Please contact me thru allnurses. I even looked at a 34,000 program for surgical tech today...I am 61. I would graduate at 63/4? Yes, there are financial aides out there....but there are also accredidation and lawsuits against this college(?). No, won't name it..I'm not that way. Son is a US Sailor, deployed currently but stationed now at Oceana in VAB. I would definitely consider moving....esp given the crime going on right here. ;-( So, if any of y'alll know of any LPN jobs (pedies, er, ortho, surgery, Dermatology!) ---not liking nursing homes, sorry).. in Wilm, NC., or VAB, please let me know more. Thanks.. really really need a job. --annie ps...worked for Sentara..should have NEVER left.

  6. I had applied for a job at our local prison. Day of interview, as soon as I drove in to the area, I knew it was not for me, but I still proceeded. Was an interviewer(s) of 3...I felt as if I was in "Flashdance", LOL. I had been out of work a while...wasn't up on the latest..or even the current drugs...I should have reviewed (but didn't want this job after getting there, so it wouldn't have mattered)..I am a floor and triage nurse... knowing the drugs is very helpful in relating to triage and efficiency and helps to understand the patients condition). I blew the interview..I knew it..and I told them so..lol. Never did get a response from them..although assured it would come, either way. It was from the state. No response whatsoever.. no problem...cept, just please do what you say you will do. (NC) I've worked in the ED with cops n robbers (so to speak), and thats about where, just as far as I would like to be with criminals.
  7. why not make it mandatory that they are discharged, via wheelchair to car. put this notice in the pre-op package. if this fails (once you get outside & then find "no driver"), have them sign an AMA. It should, at the least, reduce the # of times this happens.
  8. saltwaterstat replied to doris101u's topic in LPN to RN
I agree w/ beck. if you have ANY pre-requisites...do them at a community college. them if you are looking at lpn to rn (as degree), ...distance learning...go w excelsior. ...or.......if you are looking at bsn...again, locally w a community college for pre-req's, then excelsior or ISU (indiana state),....actually now, I think there are a few more choices...google.
  9. wilmington here. same boat as you. skills labs?, really?..lol...j/k. I would LOVE to find a skills labs sort of thing here. I have been told repeatedly, we're still working out of the good ol' boys network tho, so local hospital is a loss. the best job of my life was in an ED...but we had paramedics & techs galore...(it was a teaching hospital)...so if there was a blood draw, or ekg, or ...to be done, they were right there. great for the patient tho! short of taking classes at the local cc....there's nothing out there.
  10. what made you decide to choose nursing to begin with? I have viewed only a few of the messages here, so please excuse me if this has already been asked.... there are sooooo many avenues to choose from w/in nursing... , I'm speaking from experience here. for instance, I love older people, but I prefer NOT to do LTC, I love Pedies, I prefer acute/er settings.., thinking about going into legal nursing.... so, see? you are most probably in the best career field as far as a profession that has sooo many outbranching possibilities.
  11. ouch ma'aam. too funny.
  12. SO, if you've been an LPN for a zillion years.....you DO need health differences? It's only if you have graduated w/in 5 years, that you DON'T NEED IT?
  13. I absolutely love your time-line, and your goal. nice going!
  14. I'd be scared of syracuse too. j/k ! from there.
  15. ok, call me crazy, but I think a LICENSE would help. something about legality....
  16. my first job was as a camp nurse in Upstate NY...Adirondacks. I'm pretty sure I was my own first patient, as when I opened the door to the "infirmary" lol, an old army cot w/ STEEL legs fell & hit me smack in the head (yeah, the steel part). I saw stars. I figured it could only go uphill from there, and it did. ;->
  17. maybe geta small pocketsize notebook. 2 separate sections---- private/public------and the appropriate forms for each. and in each...2 more sections frig/freezer.... and then I would do the age groups...pedies or adult. most definitely speak w/ your nurse manager re your concerns. maybe she can make sure you all have the proper organization in your office re these vaccines. ---and perhaps she could make herself available to you for a double check until you are absolutely sure of yourself. --I know that would take more time, but its just an idea.
  18. it's a cute idea, but unfortunately I'd have to say nay to it. pedies experience of 18 yrs here...some kids are great w/ balloons. then there are those kids that like to put the balloons in their own mouths ..imitating trying to blow one up, and actually inhaling the balloon particle instead. I'd stick w/ stickers.
  19. ummm, LOL..can I ask where the heck do you live? 3 possibilities/hospital openings... you have to think about which one you'd be happy w/ 8-12 hrs or more out of the day. I've got + 18 in pedies, so mother/baby sounds good. also a few in the ER, so that sounds good too. pysch, dunno. see what I mean?..YOU have to decide. goodluck!!!!
  20. this is wayyy out of the ballpark. when I was a nursing student I had an 18 mo w/ failure to thrive. he was one of a twin. the other one "at home" was fine. In the end it turned out that the parents couldn't handle both. so, in light of that, I would also recommend checking the home situation. the hospitalized one ended up being discharged on the wk-end, and did not survive due to massive trauma that day. like I said.."way out of the ballpark".
  21. I think she meant that the ordering physician...if he has an office...that they might have the varicella vaccine on hand, @ HIS office, that he could supply. ---understanding that you aren't wanting to take them there. or, maybe I read that wrong. just an idea. ;->
  22. confused/cant remember...when doing the pre-requisites for lpn to bsn thru isu...do I have to apply? or enroll? w/ isu. who reports the test scores (on the pre-req's) and to who?
