  1. Overweight

I feel your pain. I have slowly gained a lot of weight as well. Working nights + my age and decreasing metabolism has made it difficult. My biggest challenge? I crave the carbs and fat desperately and when I'm already exhausted it's just easier to or...
  2. Need some New Grad advice:(

And this is why I am born and raised here in NC!! No reason to leave. Best of luck!
  3. Day shift or night shift

It pains me (lol), but NOADLS makes several good points. Obviously though, your body does take a hit on nights. We know from research it has a negative impact and it is difficult if you can't stay on that schedule on your nights off. It just depends ...
  4. Anyone work a Baylor Shift anymore?

I work weekend option nights currently. We make 20% extra per hour on our 12 hour weekend shifts (+shift diff). I then work a 12 during the week (no 20%). We used to get 33% on all hours worked but they decreased that 2 years ago. I imagine they will...
  5. Nights Shifts and your Marriage

I find it tremendously hard but for now, it's what's best for our family. I'm gone 3 nights a week and it's honestly not the nights away that are hard but rather my days off. I feel like such a slug and have such a hard time switching back to the day...
  6. Overheard at the coffee shop

And yet amazingly they are able to find their hefty quarterly bonus in that 1-2%!!! I think nurses "realize" a lot more than you might think, Asystole.
  7. To medicate or not to medicate

The OP works 3-11p if I understood correctly. These are the night nurses coming on who are questioning whether she/he gave the prn meds.
  8. Is this normal for a novice RN?

OP, I think all new nurses have moments - or even periods - where they feel inadequate and overwhelmed. Be kind to yourself! No one comes out of nursing school and hits the ground running without some bumps in the road. Keep working hard and you will...
  9. How do you handle narcissist patients?

Really Ruby Vee? She(mirandaa) is a CNA and clearly has gained wisdom from her nurse mom. Is that so bad? I, too, have a mom with 45+ years in the business and I have learned from her before, during and since nursing school 20 years ago. I know you...
  10. I have to agree. There is no shortage of adrenaline rushes in psych. For example, a schizophrenic who believes you are trying to kill them or a gang member who's essentially hiding out on our unit, keeps it interesting.
  11. BON discipline post termination?

I read your other post and given what you described (regarding the coumadin error), I do not see how it would be reportable to the BON. Prospective employers check with the Board to verify your license is active, not for an employment history.
  12. Night shift blues

It seems to me you just answered your own question. You list several reasons above why days is better for you so I would say give it a try.
  13. Taking a pay cut to go to day shift?

I am struggling with the same decision as well. I work every weekend 7p-7a with an extra shift on Thursday nights. It's doing me in but to come off weekends AND off nights would be about $9.50/hour less. We just can't swing it but I get the argument,...
  14. I actually hear this statement frequently when we have nursing students come on our unit. (I work inpatient psych.) Something along the lines of, "I mean what you do isn't real nursing." I always have a talk with them about the skills required for ou...
  15. Venting

I don't understand why your low census call offs would be impacted by which shift does the assignment. That procedure would remain the same would it not? We assess our staffing needs 2 hours prior to the start of the next shift. The assignment is mad...
  16. Venting

We are considering making the transition to that procedure as well. As it stands now, the night charge comes in 20-30 mins early to make out the assignment. I personally would like to make the change because as charge, I often don't get an adequate r...
  17. UHS

I worked at a local UHS hospital for all of 6 hours before turning my keys in. There were so many red flags, that my gut said "RUN!" And that was just in the orientation classroom. I didn't even need to see the mess on the units. Hearing about it was...
  18. Genex Services

I have been offered an RN Case Manager position with Genex but have recently discovered several bad reviews of the company online. There are a few red flags I noticed as well. Anyone out there have experience with Genex?
  19. Genex Services

Thank you for your reply. I decided to turn the offer down. Too many red flags and my gut told me not to do it.
  20. Quit great job to stay home with baby?

You said it best when you said "my baby will only be a baby for so long." I had the same exact experience 15 years ago and I chose to leave to be with my child. While sometimes I still wish I had that job, I have no regrets.
  21. RN never feels guilty when calling out

I commend you cardiacfreak for covering the unit. Sadly, that has never occurred in my career. My hospital has a no fault policy and they truly don't see a difference between calling out because you're in the hospital or calling out because you're a...
  22. 72 hour notice/AMA

I completely agree Jules A. It's very difficult being on the receiving end of a frustrated patient who has received misinformation, not to mention how the patient must feel. We always inform them of the 72 hour form on admit to our unit but that real...
  23. 72 hour notice/AMA

Here in NC, our patients that are admitted voluntarily cannot just change their minds and leave whenever they'd like. They must be evaluated by an MD and discharge orders given. Unfortunately, patients are not told this in the EDs prior to signing in...
  24. RN never feels guilty when calling out

Sounds like we work for the exact same health system! So frustrating!
  25. PRN Differentials

My health system offers a $40/hr prn rate whether you have 6 months or 26 years of experience. That baffles me. They get shift diff but no raise or bonus pay (not that us FT staff have either in the last few years).
