  1. Trouble filling Microtainers

You are not alone. Every heel stick/finger stick I have done with a microtainer has ended up looking like a fricken' scene from NCIS.
  2. That's why they get paid the big bucks. :)
  3. Peds vs Med Surg Externship

If you are passionate about pediatrics, TAKE THE PEDS JOB! 100%. :) It's hard to get into your specialty of choice. PICU experience will set you up for anything you want to do in pediatrics in the future. Good luck!
  4. Paradoxical reaction to Benadryl?

Another weirdo like my husband! ? He was also ADDICTED to caffeine and had probably had four mountain dews that day... so perhaps you are right! He no longer drinks ANYTHING caffeinated. And no longer takes benadryl. LOL!!
  5. Paradoxical reaction to Benadryl?

Interesting! You never hear about it, and when he had his little "episode", I did some internet doctoring and there have been some definite cases. Crazy! Of course, he is a weird one - if a weird reaction exists he will get it.
  6. How to handle rude doctor

I would have absolutely replied to that with you're the one that ordered the narcs.... We have fancy "care plans" essentially, that now put everything that should be ordered in a nifty little package for the docs. It has definitely made life easier. ...
  7. Paradoxical reaction to Benadryl?

I am 99% sure that PO benadryl sent my husband into Afib with ventricular tachycardia that required a cardizem drip. He now lists it as an allergy. It was the first time he ever took it, and he ended up on a cardizem drip. So coincidence or not, he ...
  8. Maybe its not empathy I'm lacking.... I have empathy. Working with kids, you have to - because you know that the parents behavior towards you and other staff is a direct result of the fact that their entire world is lying in that hospital bed. I get ...
  9. Is LinkedIn Necessary?

I haven't seen much benefit for our profession. My husband uses it on a regular basis and swears by it.
  10. Penicillin G IM injection?

It is like MAPLE SYRUP! Horrible. yes I have also given it to a pet's patient. Ugh. Horrible.
  11. unhappy parents

So these kids were bringing their medication from home every day and simply taking it in front of the school nurse? Wow, that's risky. No wonder they aren't working for you the district anymore. There is quite the street market for those drugs!
  12. Where can I get a RX for empathy? (A vent)

  13. Not enough equipment

I feel your pain. It's so frustrating.
  14. Typical Ratio?

I am in a large children's hospital, working nightshift on a general med surg floor. My ratio is 4:1... we really like 3:1, and have struggled by it 5:1. :)
  15. Worried about phenergan IV push

Well, obviously. Zofran is much more effective drug in most every instance. I give PO phenergan quite regularly, but obviously those kids aren't the rampant vomiters who aren't keeping anything down.
  16. Worried about phenergan IV push

Interesting how many places no longer allow this IVP. I had no idea! I know it's a nasty nasty drug, and care must be taken when administering... We dilute and IVP it on our floors in the pediatric population - but only as a last resort when zofran d...
  17. Would adult med-surg help me at all?

Oh yes, it will help you for sure! Any kinds of hands on patient care is going to beneficial :) Pediatrics is it's own specialty, and you'll get a good orientation when you transfer... in the meantime, you'll be getting that nursing confidence built...
  18. How many days do you work in a row?

I am PRN now,but I preferred to work two days on, then one day later in the week. That third night shift was always brutal.
  19. Every time I read one of these posts, I can't help but wonder.... Don't you realize what the "essential" means in the term "essential personnel"? We don't get to not make it in. If the weather is getting bad, plan ahead and sleep at the hospital. I ...
  20. How is it fair to put PRN nurses on call?

That is part of being PRN - you are only guaranteed your required minimum hours. For example, I am required to work 24 hours in a 6 week period. As long as I get those shifts in, everything else I work is "extra". I am not going to get extra hours...
  21. Relocating (eventually) - advice?

Hi Florida RNs! I will be relocating to the Sunshine State (Tampa Area) sometime in the next year or so, following my husband there with his work. :) I am a pediatric RN now, working bedside in acute care. I work in a large children's hospital. Anyon...
  22. PNCB

I had a study book, which like you - was questions and rationales broken down into categories. I found it to be much like the NCLEX. Are you already working in pediatric nursing? I simply quickly reviewed stuff I see every day and really studied the ...
  23. How do you get out of the room politely?

I usually just nod, smile, and then cut them off politely with a "I'll be back in a bit to check on you, is there anything else you need right now?" And that's that. The nurses I see that get so behind often get stuck in these rooms.... you have to ...
  24. Relocating (eventually) - advice?

We'll be on the other side of the state! Tampa area. :)
  25. I Should Be in Jail

Great post, OP. You really hit the nail on the head.... I hear a lot on here that to be a really effective nurse, you have to set aside the emotions of it all to really do your job. But there will never be a time where taking care of an infant who i...
