  1. Will going agency now screw my resume/career forever?

Thanks for the replies - I've really been struggling with being a "good employee" vs. having some semblance of a life.
  2. I know my fellow nurses are perfectly capable (and in some cases more capable than I am: experience wins every time) of taking care of everyone, but there are some patients that I can't help thinking about after I leave. Augghh! I'm almost looking fo...
  3. I didn't mean (and I don't think subsequent posters meant) to imply constant worry per se - I don't wring my hands and pace the floor, wondering how Room 17 is. I do occasionally think, "Huh, I wonder how such-and-such is doing," or "I sure hope this...
  4. I cant pass the Nclex-PN!!!

I agree with using Saunders, and just doing tons of questions. I think the NCLEX (either RN or PN) is more about knowing how to answer the questions - because you're not going to be able to memorize everything. Best of luck to you - you CAN do this. ...
  5. feeling dumb

The patient wasn't harmed, and you were following procedure and double-checking - so it got caught. Good job, and I bet you'll be more careful next time. :)
  6. I need to switch preceptors

You said in your original post that you aren't very confrontational. There's nothing wrong with that - some people just aren't. I DO think that this will probably be the first of many situations in nursing where it will be beneficial to both you AND ...
  7. It rings through to the secretary after the patient hits the call button in their room. The call button is either on the bed or on the thing that looks like a remote control that also has the TV controls and the light switches. :)
  8. First day ever as an RN....tips please...

Scissors, Kelleys, stethoscope, pens x2, water, snack, lunch. And you're already asking questions, so I'm sure you'll be fine. :) Good luck - I loooove tele!
  9. how many felt overwhelmed?

The general public has several incorrect beliefs regarding nursing. 1. There is a nursing shortage. 2. Nursing is easy! I mean, all we do is hand out a few meds and then we have time to sit at the nursing station playing on the internet, right? 3....
  10. I wouldn't worry about it - it took about 1.5 months between my most recent interview and getting the news that I got the job. Try to relax and enjoy your time now - odds are you'll be working at that dream job soon, and you'll wish you'd spent more ...
  11. HCA Midwest Loan Forgiveness Question(s) Please!

I really just can't get over this. I just read this post to my husband and he thought I wrote it.
  12. HCA Midwest Loan Forgiveness Question(s) Please!

I just PM'd you. I'm in a very similar situation. If you're still active on this site, I would love to hear from you.
  13. Where are nursing jobs?

Without making myself stalkable, here are the details on the drive - my husband works in one major CA city, and our home is there. I work in another that's three hours away. Once a week, I drive to Major City II, work three shifts in a row, and drive...
  14. Where are nursing jobs?

Northern CA looks good for the farming and yard chickens aspect, but not for nursing - I'm commuting 3 hours one-way to work. I'd avoid CA at all costs.
  15. I think it depends on the agency and the facility. I'm in an almost identical situation. The facility where I ended up getting per diem shifts didn't allow registry nurses computer access, so staff nurses had to sign in for you to check labs/orders. ...
  16. New Grad Oakland Kaiser

Thanks for replying. I moved to Oakland in January for my husband's job; after applying to 100+ positions here and hearing nothing, I wound up taking a position in Fresno and living/working there three days a week. It's hard here right now. Best of l...
  17. Is it only hard for Asn and Bsn nurses to get hired?

I think the issue is experience and location, not degree. An inexperienced BSN in California may look 2 years before finding ANY job, while a new grad ADN in Texas may have multiple offers.
  18. New Grad Oakland Kaiser

Virgo - are you receiving responses from Kaiser's online app. process? If you've gotten through - first, congratulations, and second, I would really appreciate any tips! Thanks!
  19. I was feeding another nurse's baby last night, and didn't check the cap on the bottle before the feed. The cap was on crooked and I spilled (frozen/re-warmed) breast milk on my hand. Now I'm all paranoid about various communicable diseases. Can someo...
  20. Can someone please appease my paranoia?

First, I want to say that you are my exposure-to-bodily-fluids hero. (Dubious as that sounds... :)) Second, thanks to you, I will now be referring to all fluids as juice. It just makes it sound so much more friendly, ya know? Third, and most importa...
  21. Can someone please appease my paranoia?

Did I think I was feeding a baby "infected" milk? No. Did this somehow turn into a "who can outgoogle who" competition? Yes. Will I post an admittedly paranoid and highly unlikely scenario when all I'm really looking for is for someone to say, "Hey! ...
  22. Can someone please appease my paranoia?

Actually, exclusive breast-feeding for the first six months is recommended by both the CDC and the WHO, if the mother is unable to formula-feed exclusively or if she lives in an area with unclean water, as proteins in breast milk as well as those in ...
  23. The "good" vents about nursing happen at the dinner table, because if I told my family over a meal that I had a C-diff/MRSA patient with Alzheimers, schizo-affective disorder, tube feedings, an ileostomy, and q1hr blood sugars who insisted on smea...
  24. There's a post like this at least once a week. If you want the sunshine and roses, then choose your posts selectively. They're out there, and you can generally tell what's what by the title. But please don't criticize from the relative safety of scho...
  25. Can someone please appease my paranoia?

I've worked with this patient population for approximately three days. I don't have kids. Personally, I don't think comments like "How can you have be a nurse and not already know this?!?!?!?!?!" are helpful. You have peds experience. I have cardiac...
