I think they do. On the units I've had rotations, generally half of them report off and go for ~45 minutes, then the other half goes. I can't think of a situation when a nurse was called back from the break room, generally the nurses on the ward handle whatever needs to be done. They also get 1/2 hour breaks at 9am and then a dinner break around 5pm. I've had classmates get in trouble for not taking breaks - the instructors saw it as a bad habit to compensate for poor organization skills since we only have 2-3 patients.

I want a bunny (okay, not really, they seem like a lot of work). Vacation for my parents, a new computer for dad, and a nice bag for mom. I will save whatever is left, and future paychecks, b/c I haven't been deprived of anything in nursing school (thank you thank you thank you mom and dad!!)

I don't think I've ever had a teacher make us bring a book to school (except once when a teacher wanted to go through the drug guide with us in term 1 to point out some important bits). I haven't had clinical instructors ask me to bring textbooks either - there are books on the unit/the computers. I'm going into 3rd year btw. My backpack only has a clipboard, pencil bag, water, and my lunch. My laptop too if a class is really boring (but lately I have been getting by with my cellphone).

No breast exams! LOL We had models set up on a table. When we were tested on the apical pulse, my partner (randomly chosen) was allowed to place and hold the stethoscope while I listened. You might have to lift up your shirt so your partner can hear lung sounds, do an abdominal assessment, etc. When my class was learning these things, we just did it out in the open, but you could definitely pull the curtains around a bed for privacy (that's what they're there for!). =)

Well, no.. The one who resurrected this thread did so by calling previous posters out on their "abuse" and wanted to put her child on benzos for immunizations.

I considered applying to 3 (the closest ones to where I live). I ended up only applying to two, with the application done for the third one, when I was accepted for my first choice. =)

My school looks at high school transcripts too (in addition to university transcripts).

Special programs only available to Dell computers? What?? My dream laptop is only $2300.

Your courseload is like what incoming 1st years at my school do. It was fine for me and everyone else I knew from my classes.

Are you taking all six prerequisites in one semester? At my school, five courses is considered a normal courseload so six would be a bit of a challenge (who knows, maybe your school's course hour loads are different).

It's like the statistics chapter of your 12th grade textbook... spread over a longer period of time. Definitely a GPA booster.

Not every hour a lawyer works is billed (just because x task is expected to take 4 hours doesn't mean it's GOING to)... especially a new grad who gets delegated time consuming tasks from the law firm's partners' cases. I'm glad that your babysitter charges less than $85 per hour??

Well lawyers make a lot of money, but apparently when you take the amount of hours they work, they make less per hour than a babysitter. Traders routinely wake up at 2-3am b/c that's when the European markets open. There's also the fact that most business people work in big cities (nurses who work in those places make more too, b/c of the high cost of living).

happy2learn that sounds like one of my professors who said, "The textbook is a 10 lb sleeping pill. Never bring it to class. Everything you need for exams will be in the lecture notes I provide online. If you don't understand something, stay after class and ask me. The next step is to go to my office hours. And if you still don't get it, THEN try the textbook." LOL

For the same reason business students dress up to give presentations/practice interviews...

Definitely look into receptionist jobs. For flexible hours, try a small clinic. A friend of mine got hired for that while still in high school and they tailored the hours to fit her (since she had school until 3pm and sometimes stayed later for club activities).

Don't forget that Langara isn't accepting applications for a while. Too many people on the waitlist. BCIT might be faster than waiting the two years before applying to UBC but if you check the website it says people with 30+ credits are preferred, so that's at least one year after high school. If you do a search for BCIT threads, you'll see that the median age of those entering nursing classes are in their twenties (I don't have firsthand knowledge on this though). When there are so many applicants, the schools can really pick and choose. E.g. a person with a 3.8 GPA who has a bachelor's is more impressive than a person with the same GPA who's just finished first year.

Well, my school offers A&P 1 and 2 together in an 8 week course so I'm sure it's doable.

I am trying to do this, but hospitals near me have waiting lists for volunteers. =( I still have a few more months to wait. However, it is very encouraging to hear how the experience has helped you!
