  1. I worked 12 hour night shifts in an oncology hospital while in my 30's. We only got paid for 12 hours. No overtime! I never ever left on time. Driving home was dangerous and it was only by the grace of God that I wasn't killed behind the wheel. More than once I had to pull over and sleep in the car to even make it home. I was fortunate to have never had an accident but some of my colleagues weren't so lucky. Even if you "make it through" a 12 hour shift you are in danger. To do your best job you need rest. Napping should be allowed on your break. Nurses should not be treated like expendable commodities.
  2. I agree with the above suggestions. It cannot be healthy for any of you!
  3. I just finished wiping the tears off my face. Isn't it nice to have a victory? So many times it doesn't work out that way. It's such a great feeling!
  4. Viva, I agree with you. I still love my job and I'm grateful that at 64 I am still able to do it. Cherry Ames was my inspiration as a child but in my profession it has been my fellow RNs and patients that keep me motivated. I'm never bored. You have turned the page but every experience you've had up til now has prepared you for your next adventure. Good luck in your new job!
  5. Merry Christmas Viva. Here's wishing you all of the best as you embark on your new adventure. Best of luck in the New Year and beyond. I hope you know that you are a treasure!
  6. Do not give up your dream! These rejections will make your success all the sweeter. I agree with those that are advising you to think outside the box. There is a way forward for you.
  7. I live in fear of a doctor like this. We need nurse advocates but we also need a nursing administration that supports them. Nurses are expected to advocate on the patient's behalf but are often in danger of recriminations. In this economic climate losing your job can be a deterrent to speaking up. This patient was put through a painful, unnecessary procedure without benefit. That is wrong.
  8. I would never make it through nursing school today! Don't give up! It may be hard but it's worth it.
  9. I moved south 20 years ago and it still has me shaking my head! People here will vote against their own self interest. Obama care is only the beginning of reform. It will take many years to catch up with Western Europe.
  10. Best of luck in your new job. You will never regret your decision to leave a job that was robbing you of the life you deserve!
  11. Truer words were never spoken!
  12. I congratulate you for jumping at an opportunity for a complete change. It is a good thing to challenge yourself. Good luck!?
  13. I learned that my life would be very different from Cherry Ames. I wouldn't get to marry the handsome doctor and live a life of adventure (she was a nurse during WW2). My uniform would not remain starched and lily white. Regardless, I have enjoyed almost every minute.
  14. My pet peeve are scrubs that drag on the floor. The patient makes an assessment of you by your appearance. The way you choose to dress can affect your professional career as well. My advice is to chose your uniform wisely.
