WIC would be an easy place to get hours. Also check with your local Public Health, Child Welfare, Health Clinics, School Nurses....Just start calling. Most people are very willing to let students in. I had no problem getting hours for my practicum. Good Luck! You are almost done!

HI LG1137, I finished WGU in January. (I started 9/1/11) I had no problem getting my PHN from the state. Loved WGU. A word of advice...When you start classes, start by going to taskstream and looking at the tasks. Then copy and paste the task rubric into a word processing document. WGU doesn't mind if you use the rubric as headings in the paper you turn in. This way you make sure that you are answering all of the points asked for in the rubric. The only work that you have to turn in are the tasks. You do not have to do any of the assignments in the course if you don't want to. The online text books are searchable. I used this to finish the tasks with the least amount of time and energy.

could you use information regarding the uterus shrinking, pp bleeding, risk for hemorrhage (why?), or how about the hormone changes after delivery and hormones that trigger breast milk production ??

you have to be a student to log in. There are e-books available and databases with full articles. It was easy to find sources for the research papers I did in their RN-BSN program.

if you have a home birth the midwife will be present. Hospital based midwives vary widely on how much time they spend with patients during labor. A doula will stay with you through the entire process as well. Having a doctor there all the time would not likely change outcomes. The L & D nurses are highly trained to spot problems and call the doctor when needed. Larger hospitals usually have a doctor on the floor at all times.

I started on 9/1/11, had 1 pre-rec and I only have 3 papers (tasks) left and I will be done! I work full time and have 4 children. I'm thinking about doing there MSN program. The tasks (assessments) are very concise. Just follow the directions in taskstream and you will do fine. It's very easy to follow and it's easy to move through quickly.

and WGU is CCNE accredited and accepted by the BRN in California for the Public Health Nurse Advanced Practice Certificate.

Western Governors RN-BSN, http://www.wgu.edu I'm nearly done and I started September 1, 2011. I had all of my pre-reqs done already. It is competency based so you can move through the classes at your own rate. You pay for time, not units. It costs $3,600 for 6 months. I will finish easily in 6 months and I work full time and have 4 children.

Oh, and the RN-BSN program I am finishing only costs $3600. Not anywhere near $75,000

In California BSN nurses are required to do a 90 hour practicum in Public Health/ Community Health. It focuses on Public health areas such as communicable disease assessment, epidemiology, assessment of the health of the community as a whole and community intervention and education. I am an ADN and am just finishing an RN-BSN program. I have learned a lot about evidence based practice, research, leadership, and public health. I think that a BSN would be helpful to a bedside nurse and is essential to someone working in community/ public health.

look at Western Governors. http://www.wgu.edu I'm in the RN-BSN currently and looking at the MSN. I have finished almost 26 units since Sept 1. I really like it and the school is very supportive and easy to deal with.

I think I already wrote a paper on this topic : ) A hint is that a BSN community health nurse would take a very different role than the LNV and FNP. There is a reason to have all of them on a team. A community health nurse would function in a much different role than a BSN in a hospital setting.

for management I think they would consider you w/o the BSN. I don't know where you live but in CA you can get your PHN with a BA + a community health class/clinical

I was a doula for many years before becoming a nurse. I think it is very important to have a doula for a hospital birth. As a doula I felt one of my most important jobs was "holding her space". Protecting her and her memory. Studies have show that how a woman precives her birth memories has a long term effect on mothering. As a nurse you can do a lot to help with this. Nursing is so task oriented that it is difficult though. We have a hosptial based doula program at our hosptial. Most of the nurses like having a doula...they know them, know their training and know they will call if something doesn't look right. The doulas are also CLCs so the nurses know they will have someone their for the "golden hour" as well as the labor.

Kaweah Delta has a critical care internship for new grads. So does Tulare Regional Medical Center. I know of a new grad that was just hired in L & D at Clovis Community. There are jobs but they are competitive. I graduated last Dec. and got hire straight into public health. You need to find a way to sell yourself. Something that will make your application different from other new grads. Get a certification in the field you want to work in and write a really good cover letter. Good luck.

I've been a doula since 2001. I did DONAs training but never recieved their certification. I don't think that the certification is worth the money personally. I did a few birth during the first year of nursing school. It was really hard. I made it to every birth but it was stressful. I'm not sure that a nurse manager would find a doula certification as a real plus. Some hospitals are very pro doula and others have very bad things to say about doulas. I would find out the philosophy of your local hospitals. So, as a marketablility issue, I think that a breast feeding certification might be better. Long term, any doula skill that you have will be very useful to you to you.

Most homebirth midwives recommend that the baby see a Pediatrican in the first 24 hours. Tansient tacyapnea of the newborn? Sometimes babies have very noisy little noses. ?? If the baby is nursing well that is a good sign. A baby who is going south will usually stop/ have trouble eating as an early sign. There is no harm in telling mom that you are worried about the baby. (although she might think that you are worried because of the homebirth)

The pay is not comparable to hospital pay. I make $6 less an hour than a new grad at our local hospital. But I LOVE my job. You asked for a day in the life.... Arrive at office, check email, return phone calls, frantically try to chart. Go to a home visit with a mom and baby, smell gas in the home, call the gas co for an emergeny response. Assess mom and baby, Do Developmental assessment on the baby. teach. Go to next home visit. No one is home so you just wasted an hour and 20 miles of driving. Call to follow up on the gas leak. Go to next home visit. Assess mom and newborn baby, spend 2 hours trying to get baby, who has now lost 10 % of his birth weight, to latch. Call lactation consultant for advise. Call WIC to try and get a pump. After 2 hours and 30 minutes of nursing the baby weighs less than when you started. sigh. Call every where I can think of to get a supplimental nursing system. No one can give them out until a lactation consultant sees the mom...no appointments until next week. Go get some formula (there is none in the house and no money) Schedule an appointment for the lactation consultant and arrange transportation. Teach, Teach, Teach. Go to next home visit, assess pregnant mom, find that the doctor has not followed up with tx plan. Call the dr. Teach pt about condition. Teach pt to advocate for themselves. Go back to office, frantically try to chart! :redbeathe

If you look on the CA BRN website there are certificate programs for nurses who have a BA in another subject. I am a ADN and got hired in public health right out of school, with the understanding that I needed to work on my BSN.
