Hi there. I'm a 10 year LPN in the state of MS. From my experience, a nurse is a nurse around here. If people know you're a nurse, they'll tell you their entire health history (it gets annoying sometimes), followed by the questions "So, what do you think is wrong with me??? and should I see a doc?" :-) I feel you and your situation though. I can relate. Just knowing that RN's are favored more in certain facilities can be challenging to overcome. Especially when you know you'd be an excellent RN yourself! While I have zero desire to work at a hospital, there are some other areas and specialties I'd like to try and guess what? They want an RN. Sigh. What makes the difference for me though is going to work (I work in LTC too) and feeling like my knowledge and skills are valuable to my employer. That could make a world of difference sometimes! We are LPN's. We are valuable already. But the sky is the limit! And as RN's we could go above and beyond. Ask yourself what you really want out of your career and if an RN license is in there, go for it! And this would probably be a very good time for us to do so. I'm an LPN. I work in LTC. And you know what? I LOVE IT. I love caring for the elderly. They are so dear to me. We are very much respected where I work and I have never felt disrespected by anyone (I think they know better) about my job title. I have no desire at the moment to pursue a degree to become a registered nurse and I'm not sure I will ever have the desire. I have found that it really does make life a little easier when you enjoy your work. If law is not where it's at for you, don't do it. If you want to enjoy a very rewarding career caring for others GO FOR IT! I promise it will work out. And above all THINK and SPEAK positively. It helps.

I'm in the sipp (Mississippi lol). Been nursing almost 5 years. Make 15.50/hr. Mississippi is one of the lowest paying states for all nurses though.

While doing a straight cath on an elderly gentleman: Me: Ok. It'll be in and out before you know it. Him: Sigh. Well, you sure ain't the first woman who's told me that!

I don't give anything that isn't ordered. Never heard of nursing dose.

MMR, varicella and proquad (which is a combination of MMR and varicella, MMRV) are all given subcutaneously. I have never heard of Hib being administered SC. We always gave IM. I believe the former are all given SC because they are live.

Also, if I'm not mistaken (and y'all please correct me if I am!) the Z-track method is for IM injections. I've never heard of it being used subcutaneously.

That is, from my experience, normal. I worked at a pediatric clinic and I noticed the same thing when I administered MMR and varicella vaccines. Also, allergy shots too.

I work prn at a nursing home in Mississippi. I make 14.10/hr. No benefits. If i work the night shift, I get 15.00/hr.

At first I was like, "blah. whatever. will not watch." But, a few months ago, I was here at home, bored and channel surfing and I caught a glimpse of the episode where the nurse's friend steals her prosthetic leg and was like "what the hell?" and I started watching it. Since then I have really enjoyed it. I can't wait for the new season... especially after the way the last one ended.

I would be a stethoscope because I am a very good listener.

I am proud as well!!! I too have been told not to stop at LPN and have been asked "so, uh, when are you going back to school for your RN?" I may just have to start replying "uh, never" just to shut people up (LOL Just kidding. I might go back for my RN one day). It doesn't matter one bit whether LPN or RN is behind your name. What you do with with those initials and patient care IS what matters.

It's ok. We've all been there. You have time to figure out what you want to do in life and whether nursing is for you. I still get squeamish from time to time (I still gag at boogers and mucus lol). Explore all your interests. Also, just the fact that you are even thinking about becoming a nurse says a lot about you. It takes a special and caring person to be one! I wish you the all the best!
