  1. Bath After Broken Water

Now, that's just weird. I had a water birth, by the way. In a huge jacuzzi, that my 2 yr old also got into. And I would do it again, at home. So the idea of squatting over a basin of water sounds...
  2. Bath After Broken Water

How is it safer for PP moms to bathe with an open cervix than intrpartum pts? The pt is "submerged" as long as they want to be. The benefit of the Jacuzzi is for contraction pain. If you don't get...
  3. Bath After Broken Water

So water births and/or hydrothearpy are not allowed at your
  4. Cholostrum/breastmilk as eye treatment

    Same here, plus mec stained
  5. Bath After Broken Water

I believe most studies cite the risk of infection is minimal. Obviously, we wouldn't perform water births if there was a risk of infection from sitting in a tub. Not to mention, birth is not sterile....
  6. One Nuvaring for 2 months?

What I have been told is that the ring has enough meds in it to last 4 weeks. So instead of taking it out at 3 weeks, having a cycle, then starting with a new ring, you could leave it in for 4 weeks,...
  7. Labeling Pitocin

We do the same, then chart int he bedside chart when the dose/rate is changed. Not on the bag. And we mix our own pitocin
  8. Is this common?

Thankfully, it doesn't happen often at my facility. But then our docs usually stay in house when their pts are active. Many times we start pts pushing before the doc arrives. If it looks like it will...
  9. Personal viewpoints

Nope, I think there are a few of us crunchy folks everywhere. :) I am a breastfeeding, non vaccinating, cosleeping, cloth diapering, baby wearing Mom too. When asked for opinions regarding...
  10. tubs in LDRs- need advice for new hospital

We originally had one jacuzzi room, and three rooms with "portable" tubs. They weren't actually portable, because they were so huge we never moved them. The problem came with filling and draining them....
  11. Cholostrum/breastmilk as eye treatment

Completely agreed. Actually, it is really just this one particular nurse. And yes, I think most of the pedis are supportive of BF, although I have seen a few order baby's to have supplemental feeds...
  12. Cholostrum/breastmilk as eye treatment

At 44 the baby was going to nurse. Would you give formula to a breast baby if the BS was 44, w/o talking to the parent? That is my issue here. And yes, they can still bf. One bottle is not the end of...
  13. Cholostrum/breastmilk as eye treatment

I said 44 was borderline. 37 was low, and fell into our protocol. The intial BS did not which is when the nurse TOLD the father she was going to give it formula despite that it was a breast baby, and...

  15. Cholostrum/breastmilk as eye treatment

I hope that someday we can cross train to do bedside transistion, but I know it will be a long hard process. We just cross trained for PP. And man, the long time L&D nurses were not happy. We...
  16. Cholostrum/breastmilk as eye treatment

That's what I would like to know. Apparently, most of them don't even know you can refuse it. But I looked up the policy for them for future reference. Our nursery is like neonatal detention. The...
  17. Cholostrum/breastmilk as eye treatment

Most of our pts don't protest it. So when they do, the NSY has a fit. I think thsi couple that requested no treatment, were planning the breastmilk as an alternative, since they knew the anitbiotic...
  18. labor room nursing interventions

Ohhhhh, we just use PCA for CS pts. But, if they kept it in for 48 hours, didn't that make it difficult to ambulate? Or is that like a walking epidural? Our pts with epidurals have continuous...
  19. labor room nursing interventions

What is PCEA? And no, it is 3-6 hours after last void, whether that was a cath or a trip to the BR. Generally, they void before th epidural is placed, then we cath 2-3 hours after it is placed....
  20. Youngest labor patient?

I had my first 13yr old pt the other night. She was an amazingly strong girl, who looked nothing like the 12 yr old she was when she got pg. Luckily, her mother and grandmother, while not happy about...
  21. labor room nursing interventions

We don't use foleys for vag deliveries, even with an epidural, so I can't help you. Deb, do you really end up cathing pts quite often after delivery? I've rarely had a pt unable to get up to void...
  22. Operative Vaginal Deliveries

Most of our docs admit to not having used forceps in years. I've only seen them taken out twice. Once they were just at the rady, but never used. The second time was after an unsuccessful vacuum...
  23. uh-oh...40 and pregnant and nursing school

Congrats Kellye! :balloons: My third child was born just ten days after I graduated from nursing school. Yep, it was tiring, but not more than most students with kids at home. I'm sure you'll do...

  25. Inductions with Pitocin??

These days it is not recommended to use prostaglandins for induction on a VBAC pt. If they are inducing because of your condition, and pitocin is their only option, that may be why their talking...
