I gave my first injection of rocephin a couple of days ago. It was mixed with lidocane. Person never even flinched, but then they are comatose. I appreciate reading this thread before I give it to someone who can feel it!

I have worked all 3 shifts, but am a true night shifter and have no intention of changing to days. Never had any of the day shifters in my place work a night shift, but I have stayed over and worked days. The biggest shock is to the CNA's when I pit...

Some of the LTC in the area are: Manor Care, Lutheran Social Services, Pleasant Acres Nursing & Rehab, Colonial Manor. These are all in close proximity to Dallastown and usually hire new grads.
I am a fairly new LPN working in LTC. Several residents who are NPO have orders for cough syrup to be given via PEG tube for coughs. The cause of the cough varies with each resident. How does cough syrup given via PEG tube help control the cough? Als...
Thank you all for the information. Most of the residents get either guaifenesin or guaifenesin with dextromethorphan. I understand how the dextromethorphan can work systemically when given via PEG tube. I am still not sure how the guaifenesin alon...

The LTC facility I work at has ~350 residents on 5 floors. I work on the respiratory floor, and 1 hall is dedicated to vent/trach patients. It hasn't been a problem because there is a respiratory therapist there 24/7/365 that does all trach/vent ca...
I work in a nursing home which allows us to digitally disempact. My experience has been that nursing homes are bowel obsessed. Residents are all on bowel meds, each BM is recorded, reports generated daily, assessments done, fluids encouraged, reports...
I will echo what super RN & coolpeach said. Overall, "true" nightshifters (those who work nights by choice rather than necessity) are a different breed. There is a skeletal staff so we learn to be more self-sufficient as well as part of a tight...

I highly recommend going to the learning center of your school. Everyone learns differently. They may be able to help you find the best way for you to learn. Some people are visual learners, others are auditory learners, others are hands-on. Rea...

If your desire is to go into nursing and you need or are able to work, I would highly recommend working as a CNA while in school. First, it will give you valuable experience working in the health care setting. Also, the market is flooded with new g...

Another thing I like about night shift is there are fewer "rules" to follow (not that I follow the "rules"). Meals are whatever I am in the mood to eat. When I get up at 9pm, sometimes I eat a bowl of cereal, tonight I ate chicken salad. Tomorrow ...

Personally, I love night shift, but I have always been a night owl. I agree with the above, that you will either love it or hate it and that people tend to be more laid back on night shift. Because of the skeleton staffing, there is more teamwork a...
Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! I took my NCLEX as soon as I could (graduated in mid-December, took test early January). This way everything was fresh in my mind. I studied using the NCLEX study guides, which worked well for me. I als...
I usually go to bed between 12-1 PM and get up between 8-9 PM. It helps that it's just me and my dog - who is use to my schedule, since that is all she's ever known.
As a night shift nurse, I agree charting can get monotonous. I am requires to chart on anyone on medicare, abx, new admits, hospital returns and more. 1: For skilled residents, my typical note would have VS if taken, followed by "resting in bed with...

I began my nursing education at the age of 50, became an LPN (with most prereqs for RN done) at 52, am now 54, finished RN prereqs and planning to continue on to RN next year. I agree with previous posters that age is not a hinderance in nursing. I...

To the OP: Excellent post! Despite the bad rap LTC nurses have, you realize the skills it takes to do the job well. I, too, am a fairly new grad (12/08) working in LTC and couldn't agree more. We have vent, psyc, med-surg...well just about every...

I work in PA also, in LTC. We go by the 1 hour before/after timeframe. With a PRN med, if it is q4H, we can't give it closer than 4 hours apart, ie: if it was given at 0100, we can't give another dose before 0500. In LTC, many med passes can barely...
I work for a county run LTC facility and pay $36.00 every two weeks for single coverage. This includes medical, dental, prescription and optical. Not sure what the rate is for family, certainly just as reasonable.
Live in south central PA, graduated 12/08, worked as NA in ALF while in school, moved right to the SNF (same company/campus) once I passed the NCLEX in 1/09. My position was part time, no benefits with lots of extra hours available. I questioned ag...

What gets to me is often it is us hard working, honest, taxpaying citizens that are paying for their drug habit. How many of them are hard working & honest vs. the ones spending tax dollars (Medicare, welfare, ect) to pay for their habit? Meanw...
Like you, our schedule is crazy and random - 2,3 or 4 nights on, 1 off. The only thing I can count on is having every other weekend off (Fri & Sat nights). I love working night shift, but hate the random schedule. It's hard to adjust. I try to...
