  1. X-Ray Exposure

I don't know the specifics, but I've heard that even 3 feet drops the exposure tremendously. And it gets exponentially smaller with every extra foot of distance between you and the machine. Any kind of barrier, like being around a corner, helps treme...
  2. I've only been an RN for 6 months, but I started in the ED. I'm already pretty cynical. EVERYONE comes to the ER hungry. If it's not the patients asking for food, then it's their family members ranting and raving over how terrible the service is, whe...
  3. In my ER most people will ask you if you want something done first. I've had co-workers discharge my patients, but usually after they've asked me first. Very rarely, when I've been totally in the weeds, has someone sent a pt of mine home without aski...
  4. Endometriosis sucks

I have endometriosis as well. I haven't found anything to work as well as BCPs. Are you having side effects from your pill? Maybe you haven't found the right one yet. I tried many different ones until I found the best one for me. Please talk to your ...
  5. Now why in the world would a person take Motrin by themselves at home if they know they can get it at their local friendly ER? Oh and I'm sure he hadn't eaten all day either and where was his dinner tray please?
  6. Coding at 5am -6am

I'm fairly new at this but I often hear the codes called right after change of shift on the floors...I always assumed it was because the new nurses came in to assess their patients and found them in arrest. I work in the ED so we handle our own codes...
  7. "to go" medicines?

Oh my, I never thought about this. I work in an urban ED, there are plenty of 24-hour pharmacies around, and I will often give take home packs or one or two doses of meds to patients when ordered by the MD/PA/NP. It doesn't happen every day, but it i...
  8. Poll for those who have already taken NCLEX..

    1. How many questions did you take on NCLEX? 75 2. What study materials did you use? Did you take a test review course? I took the Kaplan course and used their course book and computer tests. 3. Did your SON offer any testing (ERI, ATI, HESI)? Y...
  9. Removing a Catheter from a male pt

    Agreed.
  10. Let's introduce ourselves...

HI! I graduated in December 2004 and I'm working in a very busy ED. It's not a trauma center--thank goodness for me, because I'm learning so much right now I can't imagine trying to handle traumas at this point! Other places I can see myself are onco...
  11. The thingamajig

Actually I don't use them at all! But as a student I was curious as to what they were. Usually when I look at labs I just think of what they represent. Also the hospital has its own set of normals, so if something's out of whack it's very obvious.
  12. Union Hospital

I've talked to some agency nurses that work shifts up there. I haven't heard anything bad, but then again I didn't ask too many questions about the hospital.
  13. What type of Automobiles do you drive as a nurse.

RN, Female -- 2002 VW Jetta V6, great car. Next car will be a Honda hybrid or a Prius. But probably not for another 3-4 years 'cause I like not having any car payments at this point in my life.
  14. The thingamajig

One is for the Chem-7. It looks like a tic-tac-toe board with an extra Na | Cl | BUN K |Co2 | Creat and glucose is on the right. Another is for CBC. It looks like a line with a > on the left and a Hgb Then there are two others: Ca, Mg, and...
  15. Share Your Saying

Great quotes so far. Keep 'em coming. I have one that Lily Tomlin said, but it was in a play (don't know which one), so it can't be attributed to her: "We're all just time-sharing atoms."
  16. Do You Have a Bad Back from Nursing?

I'm a small person--I wear a size 2 and I admit that I'm not very strong. Working as a tech part-time in ICU for one year while in school has left me with chronic back pain. Whenever a nurse needed to get someone out of bed, turn someone, or boost so...
  17. RN Prerequisites and Program in Maryland

CCBC has great associates programs. I opted for the accelerated BSN at UMB. I have mixed feelings about the school, but I received an excellent education that prepared me well for my first job in the ED. My beef with the school lies in their lack of ...
  18. Spouse of an Er nurse needs help

Agreed. We do need some more to go on from the OP. It becomes a problem if the couple isn't spending as much time together, and one feels neglected, or if they aren't communicating and being honest with each other any more. Personally I know my boyfr...
  19. Spouse of an Er nurse needs help

Wow, you are strict. Just because I've been in a committed relationship for over 7 years doesn't mean we have to spend every minute with each other. I enjoy having friends of my own, and we do occasionally have a few drinks together. As long as one's...
  20. holistic healer

I have had several massages, all by women, and I've never had more than one body part exposed at a time. The practioner would always ask me, "do you want your abdomen massaged?" to which I would reply, "no" because I'm ticklish. I've NEVER had my bre...
  21. How does your emergency room cover call-offs?

    1. Nurses are called at 8 am to see if they can come in. Next, agencies are called. 2. Open shifts are first offered to staff. There are monetary incentives for extra shifts--$100 for a 12 hour day shift, $125 for 12 hour nights, $75 for an 8 hour da...
  22. How Long Will You Nurse?

I voted for 3 years, as I'm considering going back to school for Acupuncture. But since the program is 3 years long, and I would be starting next fall at the earliest, I think it will be more like 4-5 years. Although perhaps I'd like to combine the t...
  23. Anyone have experience with accelerated BSN?!

I finished one in December. I felt adequately prepared, and my preceptors and fellow nurses have done nothing by praise my work. Luckily I found a wonderful hospital that has a 3 month preceptorship for the ED. Others I've talked to in ICU/CCU/NICU h...
  24. Spouse of an Er nurse needs help

Does your wife see any change in her behavior? What does she have to say? When you say, "all she wants to do is go out drinking" do you mean that the two of you don't spend time together anymore? Do the two of you go out at all, or is she out every n...
  25. I know a chef and he uses Kosher salt or sea salt only. I believe Kosher salt is lower in sodium than even sea salt. I generally use sea salt due to its natural properties and low Na content.
