  1. Maternity in one room (in active labor), 2 ortho's with open #'s AND a stemi all at once with 2 nurses and 1 doc with new patients coming in every 8-10 minutes. No triage nurse...no maternity department. Ortho 5 hrs away. Mat 2 hrs away. Cardio 5 hrs away.
  2. My personal opinion is that people watch to many TV shows and don't actually know what ER is all about. Working rural ER is a totally different animal compared to a big city ER. Big city would be a cake walk.
  3. Don't do meth!
  4. Just west of Ontario most agency nurses make 10 more an hour. But remember majority don't have benefits.
  5. Good on the nurse for standing her ground. Shame on this "police officer" for doing what he did. He should be fired, charged and given a sentence like any Joe off the street. He is not above the law but in todays weak world he will get a slap on the wrist with a scripted apology to the nurse.
  6. "I have a wedding to go to. I want to feel better" Yea the waiting room is over there.
  7. Your docs order the size? Half the time here they just say put a foley in and walk away. They could care less about sizes.
  8. I give up educating patients on proper Er use. No point in wasting my breath. I do however get stern and quiet "pissed" off when we have an actual emergency and the abusers of the department keep asking how long the wait is.
  9. Health Care in Canada is simple. Patients don't matter. Nurses are replaceable. Managers save lives. Its all about the money.
  10. Manitoba, Canada $40.83 base .83 for degree differentials are around 2 an hour RNBN Er Union
  11. Just ask them nicely to take the pt home with them if they are more educated then the healthcare professionals looking after the family member.
  12. Drug seekers are entertaining to say the least. Especially when the physicians give them naproxen.
  13. Our OR, Public Health, acute floor likes to dump as much as possible on the ER. Then one day we spoke up. And now its getting a bit better.
  14. Your sister is grossing well over 100k to net 75. Trust me as I netted over 80 last year and I live in a VERY high taxed province.
  15. Nothing. So on my nights I bought everyone in ER and med/surg coffee. Said happy nurses week.
  16. I have been working in rural MB for 5 years. Started on a med/surg ward and now work ER. If you want to make money, well you can make a ton. If you want to enjoy life and the outdoors, rural is amazing. There are no IV teams, code teams or any special teams other then who you are working with. You use all the skills you learned in school and you have to keep up with current practices. Doctors are in short supply and the nursing shortage is very real in rural. In ER where I work, our "team" is very strong together which is great. Other places in the hospital there is bullying/poor team spirit. But that can happen anywhere and dare I say even in a city. The biggest challenge is the lack of resources. We get the scraps of the budget and have to do what the cities do with nothing. And I will say we do a heck of a job with nothing. I stayed rural because of my hobbies. I love the outdoors and living in a city would hinder that. I am 30 min away from 2 provincial parks and have countless oppurtunities to travel if needed. Rural living and working is very enjoyable. But for some the city is boss and rural sucks. Oh well, we have had city nurses come here and leave fast because they can't handle doing everything.
  17. Depends on the cultural background of the doc to a degree as well. We have some Egyptian doctors that have a dis-respect for females. However, where I work the females nurses make it loud and clear their attitude of females will not be tolerated. The docs here tend to have more convo's with the males however, when it comes down to pt care and brains they have their opinion on who to talk to and who is as smart as a brick.
  18. I make 40 an hour. Started at 32. Max out around 41-42.
  19. We can see over 60 pts in a day. One doc, one aide (only 8 hrs of the day) and 2 RN's. Mon-Fri we get a 8 hr day RN as well. No clerk, no floats, nothing. And at any given time our ratio is 10:1 depending on the day. And this is acceptable apparently. Manager would rather save a dollar for another hospital in the region then properly staff and provide assistance.
  20. Take a position outside of Calgary to get your foot in the door of AHS. Or move.
  21. I'm a young nurse and have made over 100k for the last three years. Over 135k this year. And it's cheap to live where I live.
  22. I sleep when I sleep. If I cant and its winter I go for a quick snowmobile ride after work then sleep.
  23. I almost ended up at Foothills 2 years ago. Had an interview and job offer for a fulltime 12hr shift. Looked at everything and stayed where I am. I make less per hour and pay more taxes BUT at the end of the day my bank account is higher here then it would be in Alberta due to cost of living.
