  1. Why Do Nurses Allow Understaffing?

unless your fresh post op hip is different than mine, you should only tolerate 5:1... 8:1 is criminal, and is only acceptable for SNF or acute
  2. Why Do Nurses Allow Understaffing?

huh? I learned how to be a nurse... I never learned to give up my seat to a doc I learned to question orders that don't seem right I learned to take control I learned to respect my peers I've spoken...
  3. Why Do Nurses Allow Understaffing?

good post... my philosophy has always been, the unit's staffing problem is NOT my problem (as a staff nurse)...that's not to say that I won't pitch in and help, but i won't sacrifice my life over and...
  4. Why Do Nurses Allow Understaffing?

only if you tolerate it, will it continue to happen... I am a house sup, and make daily staffing decisions...I would NEVER do this to my floor nurses...the charge would get an assignment, I would take...
  5. lose 1.50/hour ~ 3,000/year loss gain 100/week in gas savings = 5,000/year gain + priceless time w/ kids...more sleep time, less wear on the car... that's easy math... good
  6. Doctor Frustrations

this excerpt from his post says it all about him, and docs like him... elitism and arrogance, pure and simple... He's saying, "I'm smarter than you, nyahh, nyahh, nyahh, nyahh,
  7. Promethazine IV Question

Not trying to hijack, but I have been diluting anti-emetics (phenergan inapsine, reglan, zofran) in litre bags since 1997...I discovered this after pushing compazine (rarely used these days) too fast,...
  8. Whats with the scrubs?

I guess the registration staff (in "regular" clothes), who come in contact w/ many patients, can't run errands after work...and engineering (sharing elevators w/ patients), etc... sheesh... wearing...
  9. Nursing 10 years ago

you are correct...treat it like any (abnormal) lab value...I just don't want nurses hanging themselves out to dry... Oh, and for your question about NGT pH, it's the gastric secretions couldn't...
  10. Nursing 10 years ago

sure, but the doc would be a fool for not wanting to see it... our policy is to now fax every EKG to the doc, when not on site, and I have suggested to them that they chart that the EKG was faxed, and...
  11. Nursing 10 years ago

In both examples you gave, Tazzi, the doc was called...that's my point...My nurse called no one...We can take 10 EKG classes, but we still call the doc to initiate treatment.... And your comment about...
  12. Nursing 10 years ago

protocol is the key word...a doc has signed off the protocol, and what the protocol is, is likely ASA, NTG, etc...and you show it to the doc ASAP, NOT 6 hours later, and you aren't likely starting...
  13. Nursing 10 years ago

here's what happened on our tele floor at 0200 one day last week; The trained RN noted NO changes on the EKG, and called no one; day doc shows up, immediately orders a tridil drip, xferrs pt to ICU......
  14. Nursing 10 years ago

Just wanted clarification...b/c I just encountered that the night tele nurses at the hospital where I work, were initiating CP protocol (with an order of course) and then interpreting the EKGs...
  15. Nursing 10 years ago

What exactly do you mean interpret
  16. Nursing 10 years ago

Check the pH of the gastric content... though I taught my clinical group to check w/ air
  17. Nursing 10 years ago

almost everyone w/ belly pain gets a CT now... they don't teach air bolus to check NGT placement...they want you to test the
  18. Do nurses support physician assisted suicide?

I asked family if they wanted more morphine, if they said yes, I did it...A common occurrence in the ED... And no, I had no problem w/ pt X receiving the pain meds...I just want to call a spade a...
  19. Do nurses support physician assisted suicide?

exactly... for those that don't agree w/ pas, how do you distinguish that from hospice (except from pas, the death is within minutes)... i saw it over and over in the snf where i worked... pt x has...
  20. woman dies in ER waiting room (article)

"judge not, lest ye be judged yourself" anyway, the solution may just be to have more triage nurses...I have been alone many times in a sea of people in the WR, and as critterlover said, you may be an...
  21. has anyone ever worked at Banner Health?

The double time is true...They change incentive programs yearly...last year it was pay in lieu of benefits... My buddy works good sam ED, and is raking in the cash 2 bedroom apt in a decent area will...
  22. cardene

shouldn't be given as a bolus...at least not that I've ever done/heard of... we used it for HTN in acute CVAs 5 mg/hour, titrated up to a max of 15mg/hr our concentration was 25 mg in a 240 cc bag of...
  23. Range orders

We would all agree that with an order that reads: Percocet 2 tabs po q 4 hours, that giving 3 tabs is considered prescribing... What if the nurse decides to give 1 tab (based on the pt only wanting 1...
  24. Range orders

As I stated above, giving less is making your own range, thereby contradicting your policy... This supports my reasoning... You absoultely keep the doc in the loop w/ a BP med not working properly...
  25. Range orders

I disagree... You are assuming all the nurses taking care of that pt are doing as thorough (and the same) of an assessment as you... You have now taken away the constant (dosage) (see other posters...
