  1. Psych nursing is not a "breeze" either. you dont have to clean up poop or puke or even give baths. However, you DO have the clients who come to your office that need a bath, smell like poop or puke. Not to mention the clients who commit suicide or attempt to do so. it is very emotionally draining. you get yelled at on a daily basis about something or other, every thing that happens with your clients is your fault some how. you are going to have to "work" no matter what you do......if you dont want to work......... DON'T BE A NURSE. i love psych nursing.........and i've done EVERYTHING as a nurse of 24 years. maybe you should rethink the nurse thing
  2. AMEN BIKER NURSE HERE TOO!!!!! 84 heritage softail very custom and old school and 2005 sporty 1200
  3. I worked in a skilled pediatric facility for 15 years so i have plenty of disgusting, gross stories to tell. No only have i had trach loogies spit in my hair, my pockets (to find later) and of course an occasional one in my mouth. THE most disgusting thing i saw was a patient that had gotten up in the night and went to the soiled utility room to drink from the dirty hopper with feces in it with his shoe.
  4. i like the free pens from the drug reps. lol
  5. :yeahthat: :yeahthat: :yeahthat:
  6. I Worked Every Friday Saturday And Sunday 6am-6pm As An Lpn And Went To Rn School M-th. I Had A Two Year Old And My Husband Worked Second Shift. Graduated With 3.85 Gpa Took 21 Credit Hours Last Semester And I Was Pregnant At That Time. Whew!!!! Glad Thats Over
  7. Don't ever, ever apologize for being an LPN. I was an LPN for 9 years. I learned more in those 9 years than i could have ever learned in ANY school. I worked in a skilled facility with g-tubes, trachs, IVs, you name it we had it. I decided to go to RN school simply because I was tired of training and teaching the RNs supervisors hired to be my bosses about skilled care!!!! NO KIDDING!! BE PROUD OF THE JOB YOU DO NOT THE LETTERS BEHIND YOUR NAME. GOOD LUCK.
  8. As a former Director of Nursing and nurse manager. I totally agree with Ann
  9. My class was the last class to actually "sit and write" boards in Indiana before everything went computerized (i believe) 1993 I was scared to death that we would be the first class to sit for computer boards-I was scared to death of the "c" word (computer) WOW am I old. Oh yeah not skeered anymore!!
  10. i believe women are women and that's what women do especially if they are threatened by a "smarter, stronger personality nurse" nurses are considered "professionals" so therefore we shouldn't gossip and back stab----wrong it's our nature. the unfortunate men who work in our field are "sucked" in to this dilemma too. in a factory this behavior is acceptable because they work in a factory workers and aren't professionals. women are women. nursing 101 "nurses eat their young"
  11. I loved wearing my cap. I EARNED the right to wear it. I graduated in 1984 from LPN school and was 19 and thrilled to make $5.50/hr with shift diff on mid nights. OH YEAH i worked for 4 months without a license. OOOOOOOHHHHHHH how things have changed.
  12. i still make my bed at home with mitered corners and a toe pleat and pillowcase opening away from the door. OCD I KNOW!!!!!!!! LOL
  13. ok it's less than one week from Halloween BRING ON THE GHOST STORIES!!!
  14. SORRY cant agree with this general statement. ADRN here have been DON, SSD and every other position I ever wanted to be and made as much money or more due to experience than the BSNs i have worked with.
  15. If the unit is not licensed by the State for Medicare or Medicaid (all private pay) you don't even have to have a licensed nurse on the unit EVER. BAAAAAADDDDDDD IDEA YES but legal
  16. RUN DONT WALK to your Director of Nursing Services and GET a policy on this. When the State walks in they won't care what she was doing at home they want YOUR facility policy. There must be a policy for ALL procedures. IMO a pt should not have been admitted until the staff was trained on how to care for the pt. especially if taking care of a trach is a new procedure for the staff.
  17. I too believe there is a safety factor and a "law" that one side of the hall has to be accessible at all times in case of emergency IE not putting items (linen carts) etc on both sides of the hall.
  18. check your policy and procedure manual. an "old" trach shouldnt be treated any differently than a fresh trach as far as sterility is concerned in a ltc facility. a lot of people who have "old" trachs that have been home and caring for their own trach will practice this procedure of tap water and non sterile technique.
  19. i use mary kay satin hands kit its a 4 step to begin with then the hand lotion is wonderful
  20. I was an LPN with deep respect for RNs. My "supervisor" checked an O2 tank by lighting her lighter next to it to see how full it was OMG I ran out of the room so fast and called the DON. Different RN (still an LPN) tried to open a g-tube stoma with a pair of bandage scissors before inserting the g-tube. OMG another call to the DON. Needless to say I HAD to go to RN school so I didnt have to work with supervisors who had no clue what was going on. I'm sure I'll think of more later.
  21. I was an LPN for over 9 years before i became an RN and was NEVER ashamed to be called that. Your issue isn't that you want to be an RN but a mom to stay home and nurture your children-an opportunity most women don't have nowdays due to the economy and all the "toys" we think we need. Sandi, give someone else a chance to take that spot in the RN program and stay home.
