  1. Pennsylvania is a compact state. I have a Maryland RN license, and I want to have clinicals in Pennsylvania for my NP degree. Do I need to get a Pennsylvania license?
  2. I have another two weeks until I'm back in the health office. Then another week until the kids are back in school.
  3. I know an LPN who worked in L&D for 20 years in the Southwest area of Pennsylvania but that was about 10 years ago. As others have mentioned, you should check your area if they hire LPN's in L&D.
  4. You should try school health or case management.

Last year I busy to till the very end. This year I am so caught up that I'm looking at allnurses threads all day. I finished sending letters for med pick up and med orders. End of the year stats are almost done. Supply orders are done. Teacher packets for next year done. 12th grade files are all stored in boxes and ready to be put in storage. I don't have to do much cleaning up because my high school will be used for summer school.
  6. You are like me. I was in med/surg then emergency but I longed for the M-F work week in my previous career. I had no peds experience but the hiring manager said that I have two kids so it's good enough for her. You'll do great!
  7. You could hire a lawyer to help you. I knew someone who paid for his education using credit cards. He had 2 credit cards with a debt of $20,000 each for a total of $40,000. He hired a lawyer who threatened the credit card companies with bankruptcy; therefore, they should each take a final $2,000 payment or get nothing if he declares bankruptcy. One of the credit card companies accepted and the other took a final payment of $5,000. This savvy man eventually became a VP of a major hospital system. I know someone else who tried this without using a lawyer and it did not work for him. I am working on my fourth degree and I never had student loans. My first degree cost less than $10,000 from a state school in the early 1990's. My family was too poor to co-sign a loan and I was too stupid to know how to obtain the right loan. I was fortunate to marry the right woman who paid for my other degrees without needing student loans. So my different options are to threaten bankruptcy or marry someone with money.
  8. Welcome to School Health! Remember that ice packs cures everything. Read the the threads in school nurses. You could clean a lot from them. Also see the video for Barb G. She has a lot of good pointers.
  9. Don't get angry. Maybe she was thinking that you could do some maggot therapy in the health office. Some of the students may have dead skin on their wounds that need to be cleaned. Lol! Your story reminded me of the time I left tapped lice on the supervisor's desk for her to see but then some of the lice escaped and crawled on her desk. I got yelled at for that.
  10. Sub

RobotechTD replied to OhioBPH's topic in School
I agree that it is important to have color coded keys. I was a "new" sub in a non-busy school. I had a diabetic student feeling low and tested with a BG of 20 something but all his emergency carbs were locked up. I had trouble finding out which of the zillion keys opened the cabinet. This was my first time having a diabetic with a BG below 60 so I panicked and tried to open up the cabinet with my super strength. Unfortunately, I didn't have super strength. The student casually took glucose tabs from another diabetic's supply.
  11. In Montgomery County, MD the school nurses are called school community health nurses. They put SCHN next to their name.
  12. I love poop stories. Somebody please start a new thread called Poop Stories. I'm sure everyone here has many poo experiences.
  13. Sub

RobotechTD replied to OhioBPH's topic in School
Make a note for the sub of which students forget to come to the health office for medications and where they usually are when they get their meds (ex. before 1st lunch, or after 2nd grade recess). You can remind these students to remember.

I'm looking forward to my vacation at Myrtle Beach, SC for a week in July. The hardest thing I'll do this summer is being a chauffeur for my 2 kids going to baseball, basketball and robotics camps. I'm also taking 2 online classes for my Master's degree then I'll be done with all my core courses. When I have time, I'll be trying to make my nurse friends at the hospital jealous by taking selfies at the community pool and bragging about how I have 2 months off with my kids.
  15. As a favor, another nurse asked me to give discharge papers to a patient who was also a doctor in the hospital. When I went into the room the wife said "hey it's a male nurse!" The doctor said, in a grumpy way, do you say "hey it's a female doctor" when you see one? A little argument ensued followed by silence. I can sense the argument will continue at home.
  16. It's now your turn to annoy someone. Call the parents to let them know that their kid came to the health office for hiccups.
  17. RobotechTD replied to Farawyn's topic in School
So, what you're saying is when God created the earth, He created an elementary school, inhabited with lice, that wasn't recorded in the Bible and thus the genesis mechanism for the proliferation of head lice. Hmmm, interesting concept. You may be on to something Please don't post your concept on the internet or Facebook. Parents will believe it, just like vaccines cause autism.
  18. A student was just diagnosed with TIDM. What is your nursing plan of action? I had to write my answer on a piece of paper before I was interviewed in a room with four school nurses and one nurse manager.
  19. I worked in med/surg and emergency before going to school health. For the first time in my life I looked forward to Mondays.
  20. RobotechTD replied to Farawyn's topic in School
Lice come from the schools. Parents always tell me that's where their kids got it. It's not in their homes.
  21. I substituted in a school that had eleven students with diabetes and about 20 daily medications to be given at lunch time. There was no time to look for students who forgot to come to the health office for treatment and medications at lunch time. This is also a busy time for the frequent fliers because they use the innocent lunch volunteers to come to the health office. The nurse made an agreement with administration to give lunch detention to those who did not come to the health office for meds and treatment, including those students with diabetes.
  22. Marijuana stays in your hair for longer periods than urine and blood. My last employer gave me a 1 cm bald spot so that they could test for drugs. Is shaving a head an option?
  23. When I was new nurse, I had to deal with the most difficult elderly patient for a whole week. Just before discharge she surprised me by giving me a $50 dollar bill and an apology for her rude behavior. My charge nurse told me to give it back but I did not. I earned it.
  24. Just a reminder to those who have high schools. Tomorrow is National Walkout Day for high schools to protest gun violence. I am all for students voicing their opinions on such a strong issue. What are your thoughts?
  25. I am currently in an online Masters program where we have discussions every week. I use my school health experience most of the time in these discussions.
