Residential childrens facility..
I have worked in a residential treatment facility for the past 10 months. I find that the majority of the kids are very nice and polite to nursing staff, they have had bad pasts that they are dealing with which is why there are with us. There are always going to be a couple that may get violent, but I find that the majority, atleast that I work with are not. I have not been threatened or attacked since I have worked with the kids. If you treat them with respect and understanding, you will usually get the same in return...it's all about good relationship building. Good luck...and don't be afraid...these kids need care and compassion.

Nursing Shoes-Where are the best and most comfortable
Danskos are the only ones I've worn, but I can tell you that I do not come home with tired legs or achey back. If you ry Danskos, be sure to go and get properly fitted for them

RACC & Waiting List
Another thing to consider while waiting for clinicals to begin is to begin taking credit towards the 4 year degree. The RHSN program is set up with Kutztown University for the RN-BSN completion program- just a thought

RACC & Waiting List
I am a 2nd year student at RHSN, and it always takes that long to get in. They fill up the classes a year in advance. If you do opt to apply for the class they are starting, you will enter as a cohort and can only progress with your entire class- taking the same classes as they are. So if you have already taken all of your pre-req's, you won't start clinicals until a year after the rest of your classmates. I think that you will find a long wait no matter where you apply. Some programs have been known to have waitlists of years, or schools like RHSN do not have waitlists, rather a student applies each year until they are accepted. It wouldn't hurt to try and apply to several different schools to see where you can get in first. I can tell you that RHSN may be worth the wait for you. My nursing instructors have been awesome both in lecture and clinicals Best of luck to you

Reading Hospital Nursing program
You may have to take a few prerequisite's before applying. Contact them and they will send you information on exactly what you need and about the school. I am in my 2nd year evening/weekend program. Most of us have children anywhere from baby all the way up . You absolutely can do it. The best advice I can give you is to give it 100% with the prerequisites. Grades a a big factor in who gets accepted each year. You can meet these prerequisetes at community college inexpensively. The fact that you have no education past high school doesn't matter at all. Best of luck to you

qustion about getting into to nursing school?
I am from Montgomery & Berks county area's. I know that years ago the community college I attended had anywhere from a 1 year to 5 year wait list. I've heard of many others speak of being on a waitlist. I know I've seen others speak of a "lottery", but not sure if that is in Pa. And then there are others that consider all applicants for the next cohort based on grades. All I can say for sure is that competition is high and there are many, especially from what I have read on this site, that are just waiting to be accepted. Best advice I could give to you is apply to several schools you may be interested in, aim for 4.0, and hopefully one (or possibly several choices) becomes available to you with a sooner start time. Best of luck to you

qustion about getting into to nursing school?
As far as I know most all of the programs are waitlisted. I go to a hospital based school that does not put anyone on waitlist. You apply and you get in for the following year- if not you have to reapply again the next. I know competition is high- so keep those grades up. I don't think getting more prereq's in will help you get into school faster but it will certainly make school easier so you can focus just on nursing courses.

Ill fitting scrub tops...suggestions?
I had to get the Landau brand for school- I found the style I got fit good in the arm/chest area but huge over the waist. I looked like a bell in them. I am also a size 16. I had them tailored - 2 tops and 2 bottoms- $56. I can't wait till I have my choice of what brand/ style because I don't want to have to pay for tailoring again. But if your problem is the waist/hip area, these may be just right for you. Mine are button down tops.

Reading Hospital & Medical Center
I currently attend thier nursing program. I don't know for sure about pay- I believe I've heard somewhere around $23. They do participate in the loan forgiveness program. I have heard it is a good hospital to work at. Sorry I couldn't offer any first hand advice. Hopefully someone else who does work there answers because I will probably be working there when I graduate too.

microbiology

*microbiology Summer 07*
Congrats to all of us survivors of Micro!!!!! Personally, I didn't like the class at all- half my class is failing. I have my lecture final tonight- hopefully I get an A, but it's nice to know that since all my other test scores were good that I don't need it- just want it, so no major pressure here. I feel so bad for those in my class that really do need it. Anyway- again congrats to everyone who just finished & passed and best of luck to everyone else!!!!

...starting to wonder if I can do this....
Fortunately, my A&P clsses were mostly fill in the blank, multiple choice and matching. Like others have said, the major sciences are tough to take in the summer ( I am in Micro right now). I agree with some of the above responses; make flash cards, know & understand your main points instead of memorizing an essay type answer. I had to do this one time only- in A&P- with the firing of the neuron step by step......... It was easily a full page of step by step notes and it drove me nuts. I wish you luck!! Believe in yourself, you will do fine

? for those who wear Danskos
Thanks for your replies. Mine are just a bit too tight over the top of my foot. My left shoe fits perfect. I think I am going to give em a go and hope they stretch a little bit. My mistake was ordering online instead of going to a store to try them on. So I hate to send them back for a larger size that are too big and have to go through the process all over again. I know these are supposed to be the best- which is why I got them.

? for those who wear Danskos
Hi! I just purchased a pair of Dansko professional shoes. I was really expecting to put them on and say "ahhhhhh". However, they don't seem that comfy to me. The right shoe seems a little too tight. I guess my question is whether or not the leather stretches to a more comfortable fit after they're broken in a bit. Thanks!!!

Difference between a&p I and II?
Well, first of all, it depends on your professor. I had A&P1 at a community college where it was super hard ( only 3 of us passed out of the origional class of 30 or so). My A&P2 was at another school and pretty much the whole class passed. I got a B in A&P1(studying non-stop) and an A in A&P2, which I found to be less difficult. It's been awhile, but A&P1 was alot of knowing muscles,bones,neurons,etc..., while A&P2 is focusing on how the systems work. Best of luck to you. Just make sure you keep up with reading/studying(don't try to cram it in the day before a test) and you will do fine.

How does your school accept you?
My school doesn't have a wait list...if you don't get in you reapply the next year. GPA weighs heavily on getting in I believe. I got in the first year I applied and I know ALOT were not accepted. So keep those A's coming!!!

Tattoos & Nursing
FYI- myself included, several women in my school have tattoos, and we are at the top of our class at this time. Having a tattoo certainly doesn't mean you are less intelligent or less capable. I would much rather have a competent nurse with a tattoo than the one without that barely squeeked through nursing school. I am certainly not trying to start a arguement- just wanted to give my 2 pennies also

High School Junior
It really depends on the area you want to attend. There are many great programs. I've heard good things about Gwenyd Mercy. Also some considerations would be Credar Crest- they have a BSN program. Also hospital based schools give you a diploma- still an RN, and have aggreements with colleges to continue onto your BSN. I currently attend Reading Hospital School of Nursing, and our non-nursing courses are taught by Kutztown university, so our aggreement is with Kutztown for transfer of credit and clock hours toward our BSN if we choose to go that route. Abington Dixon is also a hospital based school. I am not sure, but it is just what I have heard, that Hospital based schools have you more prepared for bedside nursing. Any school you choose you can do well, that lies within yourself. Best of luck to you

Why you want to be a nurse?
Much like the above poster- I was in customer service for years- getting grief over orders that were not shipped yet, billing errors, etc. I felt like what I did didn't have any real purpose. It was very unfulfiling. So now, 2 kids later, I attend a evening weekend RN program. I wanted to something that: 1. Can make a difference in someones life 2. That can allow me to support myself and children in the future if I needed to do it on my own 3. Nursing had definate job security- the world will always need good nurses 4. As soon as I get over being freaked out by vomit, I know I will be a good nurse (hopefully this happens sooner than later)

alli ~ diet pill
I saw a show a couple of weeks ago where a doctor and nutritionist were answering questions about this drug. They do not recommend it, besides the mess it can make in your pants, they feel it will contribute to obesity in the future. They feel some think it's ok to eat a big mac as long as you are taking these pills. I am overweight myself, so don't have much room to talk but it's all behavior modification...behavior modification...behavior modification. Healthy foods & exercise!!!!! best of luck to you

What color Stethoscope to buy?
Purple Littman- also figured it wouldn't get taken as easily as a black one

Help with a debate: What color is blood?
Definately not blue. My A&P instructor made this very clear to us when I took the class. He felt the need to clarify that because all the models with the arteries & veins were blue & red only to help tell which was which- not demonstrating the true color. Hope this helps

Ughhh....Microbiology!!
I too feel your pain!!! I am takimg micro now, only a few weeks left. I was able to manage A's on the tests taken so far- but this next one is going to be loaded with details, so we'll see. I dislike this class more than any other I have taken. I am bored/ simply not interested in the material. The professor is not a very good "teacher", super unorganized, and went from presenting material in super slow motion to 100mph in an effort to catch up I guess. Anyway- I keep telling myself it will be over before I know it. Best of luck to you

Any recommendations on A&P II and Microbiology at the same time???
I think it depends on how much time you have to devote to studying. Both classes have alot of information to learn. It can definately be done, but just be prepared not to have alot of time to yourself. Myself- I would not have wanted those 2 classes together. Best of luck with whatever decision you make Carol
