I am about to begin my first travel nurse assignment. I plan on bouncing around from state to state every 13 weeks. When looking into professional Liability Insurance I notice they all want you to pick a state. Can I just put in the state of my permanent residence and I will be covered wherever I go? Or is it that I have to get new insurance every 13 weeks? Thanks.

That is a great question. I'm pretty sure I asked NSO that question many years ago and they said that using your state of residence covers you everywhere. However, the premium does vary depending on your state (with Texas the highest by far I think), so I'm not sure that makes sense. I think you will have to verify that with the insurance company. Please post if you get a definitive answer.
I called NSO and they said that you chose your home state and as long as you carry a license in the state you are traveling then you are covered.
Thanks!

You can buy instant malpractice insurance online for almost any state you work in, which you should- they all have different criteria. All they ask usually, online, is if you have or have had any claim against your license, in any state. If you lie, they simply won't pay any claim against you- and they initiate their investigation on you only if a claim is made, not when you apply. Cheap and easy, and they send you an instant policy confirmation via email.
